Predictions for the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009

These are some picks considering that next year’s Wrestlemania will be located in Texas.

The WWE will be inducting new wrestlers into the Hall of Fame next year and based upon last year, it will probably be a Texas-based theme. As you probably know, Wrestlemania 25 will be in Texas and to fit tradition, it is time to look at some of the possible candidates. Each year there have been inductees but without further or do, I’m going to pick out a few and give some possible reasons as to why they will probably get inducted.

The Funk Brothers: While they had a run in the WWF that didn’t last long, mostly they would be known as NWA wrestlers well maybe Terry for more than that. Terry for sure will get in and was considered by many a guy who would put over stars to help other guys become bigger than what they are. Dory I never saw much about him but I know him and Terry were both NWA Champions probably making them the only brothers to ever have held the NWA Title. His last national appearance on TV would be if I recall correctly on the Raw to build up One Night Stand and man was he in horrific shape and could barley walk down to the ring. However, that shouldn’t really be the legacy. The legacy would be two brothers while going separate paths will be known as former NWA Champions.

The Von Erich Family: Nothing else could be said other than some of the documentary in the WCCW DVD that the WWE produced though there is more information about this team. The only thing that may stop this would be the suicides happening and the tragedy that had befallen the Von Erichs. Kevin Von Erich says there isn’t a curse but more of a situation that his brothers had done to themselves. Most likely if you were in the Texas area and saw WCCW back in the 80s, that could strengthen the case of putting them in. I know you’re thinking well they weren’t big in WWE but neither was Verne Gagne and he was inducted. The only member of the Von Erich family that wrestled in the WWE, back in the WWF era in the early 90s would be Kerry Von Erich.

Stone Cold Steve Austin: Most likely the one that will be the headliner for this class of 2009. You wouldn’t think he’d be inducted for at least a few years but it’s bound to happen and probably the one that will close the Hall of Fame presentation. Here’s a guy who has won 3 Royal Rumbles, been a 6-time WWE Champion, and arguably the face of the Attitude Era.

The Freebirds: What could be said about the original Freebirds? Probably most famous would be for the feud in Texas with the Von Erichs. That was a big deal back then and you had to think back on that. I do remember the Freebirds but they weren’t the original ones in WCW with Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin. Again after seeing some footage of the past and how they separated themselves from the pack and probably becoming one of the first if not the first “cool heel” in wrestling.

These are my picks for the 2009 WWE Hall of Fame. I don’t expect there to be any wrestlers inducted that are active in the ring at least in the mainstream. There will be others going in the future. This class may be large but it makes sense based upon the Texas based area. Enjoy and whether or not these picks actually happen will be another story.

Taking into consideration that Wrestlemania 25 and the Hall of Fame will be originating from Texas, makes me really lean toward a Texas themed Hall of Fame with possibly 2 extras that really deserve to go in.

    Fritz Von Erich (post humosly)
    Pepper Gomez (post humosly)
    Terry Funk
    Dory Funk Jr
    Bruiser Brody (post humosly)
    Ricky Steamboat
    Tony Garea
    Bob Backlund
    Ted DiBiase

I have heard the WWE and Bruno Sammartino are coming to terms after all these years. Probably, if things pan out accordingly, we will see the following in 2010:

    Bruno Sammartino
    Honky Tonk Man (Wayne Ferris)
Demolition (Barry Darsow & Bill Eadie)
    Carlos Colon
    Tiger Mask
    Antonio Inoki
    Abdullah the Butcher

Too bad that Jack Reynold’s will not witness the HoF induction for 2009. He passed away in October of 2008.

I am hearing the same names right now….DiBiase will headline, with Terry & Dory Jr Funk, Ricky Steamboat, Bob Backlund, Fritz Von Erich (post humosly), Pepper Gomez (post humosly),
Bruiser Brody (post humosly) and Tony Garea.

It’s going to be a great class to induct.

Several wrestlers came to the funeral service for Jack Reynolds. Abdullah was heart stricken to see his friend for the final time. He made a comment that he hopes he’s around for April of 2009.

Now was that a hint of a possible induction….?

It was shown on WWE.com Main Page by accident that Stone Cold Steve Austin will be inducted this year and will be the head of the class. It was on there for just a short time untill they took it down like maybe they put it on there too early.

Many managers have been inducted to the WWE Hall of Famefrom the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and millennium such as Arnold Skaaland, Freddie Blassie, The Grand Wizard, “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd, Captain Lou Albano, Jimmy Hart, Mr. Fuji, Bobby Heenan, and “the Late” “Sensational” Sherri.

Ken “Reverend Slick” Johnson should also be inducted in the Class of 2009. He was a manager in the 80’s and he is also from Texas. He is currently an ordained minister in Fort Worth, Texas. Kamala deserves to be inducted because Mississippi is not fa from Texas. In Closing, let’s not forget “the Late” beloved Elizabeth Ann Hulette the manager, sweetheart of WWE and the Fans. She is truly missed by all. Definitely Elizabeth Ann Hulette deserves an induction.

P.S. The Funk Brothers Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr., and their father “the Late” Dory Funk Sr.,. All three deserve to be inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame 2009, the brothers were born n Texas and their father passed away in Texas.

Kerry, Kevin, & David Von Erich, I agree with Abdullah, The Funks. I think the Freebirds, Carlos Colon, Steve Austin (Lock), Ricky Stemboat Pretty sure a lock, The Road Warriors are long overdue. As far as the Warrior he’s a joke. I never was a Backlund fan. I like Hansen, and Brody as picks. Howard Finkel great pick MSG memories. Triple H will be in the Hall just not now. Taker and Shawn Michaels will also be just not now. The Rock is questionable. He didn’t really have a long career. I do like the Rock, and thing he is one of the greatest ever on the mic. Ted DiBiase not a big fan of his either. Not to sure on that one. How about Rick Rude? Randy Savage? Wahoo McDaniel? Ivan Koloff? The Rock & Roll Express? The Midnight Express? Blanchard, Arn & Ole Anderson?

Who are you all kidding? The Warrior will not be inducted while he still breaths. His speech would be absolutely nuts and probably hilarious. Vince is afraid of what he might say, same as Macho. Although Macho has a better chance of getting while he is still alive.
Austin is in, as is Cowboy Bill Watts (who I have never heard of). Other people have said that Steamboat is getting in, which is way overdue. If those rumors are true, the class will probably be: Austin, Watts, Steamboat, Funks, Von Erichs, & Freedbirds. A strong Texas contingent, with Steamboat as a well past due entry.
I would like to see Terry inducted individually, but they might as well get them all out of the way. Backlund and Sammartino have repeatedly refused induction, so I don’t see either of them getting in for awhile.

    Late Noms:
Jake Roberts, Ted Debiase, Jushin Liger, HBK, Demolition, Owen, Davey Boy, Sting, Macho, Rick Rude, Jim Cornette, Vader, LOD, The Rock, Barry Windham, Arn
I expect each of these guys to get in within the next 3 years.

The rasslin bidniz was always about puttin buttz in the seats. Who generated that the best for the longest time is always subject to fun debate. Honoring careers, characters, etc. is what we fans will do. Putting someone into Vince’s Hall is part respect and mostly “what sells WM”.
    My picks:
Stone Cold, Freebirds, Von Erichs, Steamboat, The Four Horsemen, the Funks.
Who would be fun to see considered? The Bushwhackers!

for consideration for 2010….i agree with alot of the posts here, since i see alot of you are long time fans and enjoyed the years of entertainment these characters gave us!
STING!,Abdullah the Buthcher, Miss Elizabeth, Randy Savage, Road Warriors, Rock n Roll Express, Midnight Express w/Cornette, Wahoo McDaniel, the Koloffs (Ivan and Nikita), Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson, Johnny Weaver and Nelson Royal, Garea and Martel, Magnum T.A., Austin Idol, Bulldog Brower, Boron Von Raschke, Paul Jones, etc

There are lots of names who put their hearts and souls into the business for 20 or more years, and entertained us and never disappointed us for the price of a ticket. Many of these great entertainers will hold a spot in the Fan’s Hall of Fame!!!

I am 110% for the VonErich’s. They were more popular than SNL on saturday nights. I agree there has been tremendous tradegy in that family, but the legend lives on. They all deserve to be in the hall of fame with such greats as ric flair and hulk hogan – 2 people who made wrestling what it is today.

I would love to see The Rock, trish stratus and the rest of the hart foundation in the hall of fame for 2009.

Also, i don’t think that chris benoit will be inducted solely because of the whole double murder suicide thing. When the WWE learnt of this they severed all ties with him, completely acted like he didn’t exist on their website and tv. Based on his career he deserves to be inducted, but because of the way his life ended i highly doubt it.

  36. Posted February 25, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Thanks for the comments on this. I’ll try to answer some of these questions about some names.

    Sensational Sherri-Was inducted in 2006

Bruno Sammartino-Wouldn’t get in most likely due to bad blood with Vince McMahon.

Randy Savage-Not a clue on that and should get in and should headline his own class. He deserves to be the star of it. If he gets in, Miss Elizabeth should go with him in that class.

Owen Hart-Not likely due to his wife.

Chris Benoit-All ready mentioned due to the double murder-suicide.

The Rock-Probably to get his own class.

Undertaker-Still active and may not get in for a little bit.

Ted Dibiase-It’s possible it could happen.

HBK-Still active at this time and may wait for his own class.
Road Warriors-Will get in at some point hopefully soon.

Trish Stratus-Probably in a few years.

To answer the first comment, not likely for a while to get in. Triple H, Chyna, Stephanie McMahon, The Hardys, Undertaker, Trish, and Lita may see it in the future. Stephanie still has a way to go before getting in.

    Keep them coming everyone.

Ummm, someone said there were rumors of the first WM outside of the USA next year? Was someone in a coma for Wrestlemanias 6 & 8 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada or do you just listen to “Living in America” and believe that Toronto is a city in the US?

I doubt Warrior or Bad News Brown (who didn’t last long and quickly developed bad blood and has been deceased for 2 years so is unlikely to really be able to clear the air) will get in.

I fully agree that Elizabeth should get in…but maybe the Randy Savage thing needs to finally be put away first.

Some of the other names on here, I agree, are VERY outrageous and unlikely, while others will certainly have to wait…
