At UFC 102 Brandon “The Truth” Vera was set to take on tough dominant wrestler, Matt Hamil. But due to an injury Hamil was forced to pull out of the fight leaving a huge gaping hole for any fighter to jump into. There was only man that could jump into these huge shoes to fill, the hardest working man in the UFC today, Krzysztof Soszynski. This would be the second time in a row that Soszynski would step in to replace a fellow fighter but this time he very well could have bitten off a little more than he can chew. Soszynski has fought for promotions all over the United States but this could very well be his stiffest opponent to date. So far in his career, Soszynski has only fought one other opponent who could be regarded as a top tier fighter and that was “Big” Ben Rothwell, but aside from Big Ben it could be argued that Soszynski hasn’t fought anyone like Vera in his career.
The fact that Soszynski has been fighting mid level fighters for the past two years doesn’t help his cause right now. As great of a fighter that he is, he very well could have made a huge mistake by agreeing to face Vera. Brandon’s latest fight was a brutal KO destruction over Mike Patt, a fight that would have done well to put the fear of god into any fighter in his division that saw the fight. Vera’s win was emphasized by the fact that he had looked so poorly before that fight. Vera was seen as the most overpaid fighter in the entire organization as he was earning a lot of money to lose fights, but with his contract with the UFC on the line, Brandon got back to the drawing board and worked his butt off to get into the greatest shape of his life and it showed well when his leg kicks alone did well to tear Mike Patt apart. But one fight do enough to convince MMA fans the world over who had seen Vera go from one of the most feared strikers around to a lazy fighter who kept taking losses.
Vera might have blown a sigh of relief when he heard that he was no longer facing Hamil. The strong wrestler would have proven himself to be a very tough customer against Vera who hasn’t looked phenomenal when defending take downs and fighting off of his back. Now he has to rethink his gameplan to take on Soszynski, which should be an easier night for Vera who is looking to make his comeback. While Soszynski is a tough wrestler, he isn’t nearly as dominant in that position as Hamil is and the fact that he might just try to stand in front of Vera and trade strikes plays right into the plan for Vera. At this point in time Soszynski’s biggest weapon is his fighting brain, he is an extremely intelligent fighter who can adapt very fast to any form of style put in front of him. As the saying goes “The brain is the strongest muscle in your body” which could have Soszynski coming out with the win, but it won’t be easy at all.
If Vera can stay on the outside, land the kicks and eventually wear and tear his opponent down, there is no doubt that he will win the fight. But if the fight does get to the ground, which Soszynski would be smart to do, you could very well see a decision win for Soszynski. But at this moment in time and after how impressive Vera looked in his last fight, only a dumb man would bet against Vera. Vera wins via TKO.
