Tennis has always played an important role in the lives of people in the United States. After watching the latest tennis news on ESPN.com, I have just learned that participation has grown in the past ten years. The great news is that tennis has always been a popular sport, but it has recently made a comeback. Participation has grown to 43% as opposed to last year’s figure, 10% according to ESPN  sports anchor Mary Joe Fernandez.

“It’s good news for tennis,” said ESPN sports anchor Cliff Drysdale. Tennis is a sport for both children and adults at any age and any level.

For those of you who are new to this sport, I am going to tell you about the game. Tennis is a sport played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (double). Each player uses a tennis raquet to strike a ball over the net into your opponent’s court. According to ESPN sports achor Mary Joe Fernandez, tennis is a great workout in a small amount of time.

In addition, tennis is an Olympic sport enjoyed  by millions of recreational players. In 1877, the first championships were played at Wimbledon in London. Thus, Wimbledon, the U.S Open, the French Open and the Australian Open became and have remained the most prestigious events in tennis.

School did a brilliant job of putting me off tennis for ever, I never watch it and I dread Wimbledon fortnight when it is on TV every day. I much prefer snooker! Anyway, it was a nice article.
