Remember the good old days? I mean the real old days when white was all the rage and women tennis players wore full length skirts that gave way to the knee length variety. Men were expected to cover their legs with long pants up until the 1946 Wimbledon.
While the color of tennis clothing has changed through the years as the styles have changed, white still remains a staple of tennis matches, but the styling has evolved dramatically. This year’s Wimbledon saw fashion in the form of trench coats and military styled jackets. No they are not actually playing tennis in this garb, it is what they wore before and after the game – the warm up wardrobe, so to speak.
You may have seen Maria Sharapova at the 2009 Wimbledon match wearing a short white military style Jacket. Roger Federer was all the rage as he sauntered onto center court, much like a male model making his way across the catwalk. He wore a white, navy style jacket with lots of pockets and a gold emblem. Serena Williams went for a mini flared skirt trench coat.
When Federer discarded the military gear to play, he looked like a true English gentleman in tailored white pants, white shirt and a white waistcoat. But there was more to be revealed as the trousers and waistcoat was stripped to reveal classic shorts and tee with a touch of gold trim.
The warm up gear is only a fore bringer of what fashion statements are lurking beneath. Britain’s Georgie Stoop went for the soft frill and layer look, which danced around her body as she took her swings. Maria Sharapova revealed a simple but stylish cross your heart dress with flounced skirt.
The fashion trend continues at the 2009 US Open as more extraordinary stylings are revealed. Take Maria Sharapova’s red hot dress with Swarovski crystals for night and her daytime black and white dress all adorned with images of the New york skyline and skyscrapers.

Serena’s pink cocktail dress is dazzling to say the least and both Serena and Venus Williams stylish whites are high fashion and glitzy. Anna Ivanovic’s purple adilibria dress is stunning as is the darker evening version. Both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova’s clothing lines have collaborated with Nike to produce this year’s tennis fashions.
