Andy Roddick vs. Andy Murray (Wimbledon 2009)

My take on the semifinals match between Andy Roddick and Andy Murray.

It’s Andy Roddick versus Andy Murray this year on the Wimbledon semifinals! Isn’t it always exciting when the contenders have the same name? Like David Archuleta versus David Cook. He he he. Back to tennis…

I usually hover around forums discussing these two players, and I see that Murray is highly favored. I understand the hype and excitement, after all, for the past 8 years, UK has been but a gracious host for the tournament, not a competitor. This year however, UK has high hopes for their highest seeded. I remember France having a familiar story just months ago at the French Open; however, their bet and local hero, Monfils, bowed early at the quarterfinals against Federer. Murray obviously shows better progress than that, but let’s see if he delivers.

Like Monfils at the French Open, Murray must face Andy Roddick to move on with the competition. Roddick is already considered an icon in tennis although he surely wouldn’t have the same support from the crowd as Murray. Roddick is a veteran player at the Wimbledon, having reached the finals twice and losing both to Federer (which is justifiable, anyone could have lost it to Federer then). He also holds the record for the fastest serve, which is very deadly. Some say that Roddick is a “fading light”; that his best tennis years are behind him. I personally, do not think so. I think he still has enough skills to be a big threat, even though he plays best at hard courts, not grass.

I couldn’t wait until Friday, I am definitely watching this match. I have no predictions, whatsoever as to who would win; but I am psyched to find out who would have much love in the end.
