In this article, I discuss why Americans need to cool down and relax. And, the best way to do that? Indulge in sports.

Just last week, a close friend of mind asked me this very question, and it really did make me think. As a writer, I’m always thinking about why I write what I write. Yes, if I wrote for the New York Times, I’d much rather write about politics, current events- the past war in Gaza. Because, majority of readers on Wall Street are focused on what’s going on in our world- our country. And, yes, I must say, our country- well, it isn’t doing so great.

With the government suffering- the economy is terrible, our president from the past four years, questions about our new president for the next four years. Racism. Drugs. Bad schools. Global Wars. Yes, I can honestly say that it’s not planet in peril- it’s country in controversy.

Thus the need for distraction! We need to sit back for a minute, clear our minds, and just relax. Bankers, accountants, mortgage companies? You can all take a break from the biggest economic downturn in decades. Israel and Palestine? My God, stop the fighting. No need for it. President Barack Obama? You can stop thinking about, well, whatever it is you’re thinking. Mr. Bush? (Sorry, nothing came to mind).

With everything that happens to, well, happen, it’s vital for us not to have our noses stuck into problems and work. As I’ve learned from past experiences where I just crash due to so much work that needs to get done, I have learned one thing that is the key to our well-being: relax.

Think about Saturday night; you’re in your house at around 7:30, and your desk is filled with bills and other things you need to complete for Monday. Can you imagine what may happen to you if all that you did that night, or even, your entire working career, was based on work?

Now imagine this; you have the same scenario, but you don’t head for the desk. Instead, you head for the couch or recliner. You don’t pick up a pen; you pick up a remote. And, you don’t stick your nose into the work; you stick your nose into a playoff game. Which sounds better?

Americans, I urge you to stop, as the teenagers say it, “freaking out” over such work. It’s ok to take a 2-hour break to watch some television. Because, in the long run, if all you thing about is work, you’ll just end up a wreck. And, being a wreck does no good for your body.

So, cool down, stop the fuss. Sit down, and chill out!
