Table Tennis Top Spin

Top spin in Table Tennis is used the majority of the time when playing aggressive. I will explain the key points, it’s considered a basic hit by almost all serious players. I have researched this information and I am coached Table Tennis on a regular basis. I find Table Tennis extremely fun and great way to exercise.

First of all make sure you have a decent bat. Test the grip on it by pressing your thumb firmly on the rubber. You should feel some stick, also you could get someone more experienced to tell you how much grip the rubber has. However if it has the slightest amount of grip you should be able to get some top spin. Get a proper ball to play with, you may find lower star or lower quality Table Tennis balls can affect both players performance severely.

You must have the right grip when holding your bat so that the stroke can be performed at it’s best. I use the shake hand grip, so I can’t tell you how to do it any other way. Place the space between your thumb and index finger at the top of the handle. Your index finger should go across the bottom of the back of the blade.

Your thumb should try to stay off of the blade/rubber. The rest of your fingers remain firm but relaxed around the handle.

Now, this stroke is very difficult when starting out. To be able to do it properly you need to get a coach. But since you are reading this I will try to explain. The forehand top spin requires you to begin with the bat open (vertical) and slightly below the table. As the ball comes towards your forehand diagonally towards the ball from just below the table. The bat, as you are moving upwards, should tilt steadily so it hits the ball at a 45 degree angle. This angle varies depending on spin and length of the previous shot.

Move your whole upper body when doing this, apart from your head. You should know when you have done it because the ball will kick in a bit faster when it hits the table and should ascend the opponent’s bat on contact.

The Backhand top spin is similar but your body should be leaning slightly more to your backhand court. Again all of the advice above applies to this stroke as well. You will most likely find this harder, naturally most players have a stronger forehand than backhand. However my backhand is stronger than my forehand. This is because some players find that forehand has a lot more details involved. Backhand may seem simpler to them because your body isn’t required to move as much.

There are many other finer details. But with practice and experience your top spin will develop.

If I didn’t explain the technique properly I suggest that you watch videos on YouTube of professionals playing. Type “Table Tennis Coaching Top Spin” into YouTube and see what you come up with.

Thank-you for reading and good luck.
