Steroids are to Athletes as Sex is to Priests

Steroids and sex: Being denied what we want only inflames our desire to have it..

‘Roids. Juice. Sauce. Test. D. Go-go juice. PED’s.

Anabolic steroids.

Ben Johnson and Marion Jones risked Olympic gold for them. They risked their reputations and their health for them. They knowingly risked the scorn and derision of the entire world for them.

Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, and too many others to count – not only damaged their own reputations, but also that of the great game of baseball as well. For them.

It is widely believed that WWE heavyweight champ Chris Benoit went on a rampage and killed his wife, his seven year old son, and then himself because of them. Roid rage, as it’s commonly known: An acute psychotic break brought on by the long term use of anabolic steroids. Or, the long term abuse.

The illegal use of steroids in sport can be traced back to 1954 when the Russian Olympic weight lifting team not only left it’s competition in the (chalk) dust, but also left used syringes of testosterone littering the locker room floor as well. The sports world tripped all over themselves in their urgency to discover this magic potion and claim it as their own!

And the rest is history.

The drive and motivation to lay hands on these performance enhancing substances is far stronger than the laws that render them illegal or the medical facts that render them dangerous to one’s health.

These PED’s (performance enhancing drugs), are the strong, angry, and very hairy white elephants in the middle of every stadium, every field, and every arena around the globe.

Weightlifting, bodybuilding, wrestling, baseball, football, cycling, tennis, swimming, boxing, skating, gymnastics. There are few, if any, sports that are exempt from steroid use. It’s here, and it’s not going anywhere – no matter how many grand jury inquiries they call.

The reality is this: how is an athlete expected to stay ‘clean’ and be able to compete on the world stage against others who are clearly not? How is one to ever make it to the ‘big show’ when it’s been shown time and time again that those that succeed – do the speed!

Who cares if it causes allergic reactions, liver damage, cancer, or sudden, unexpected death?

No matter that it may cause uncontrollable bouts of anger, depression, or violence.

Makes no difference whatsoever that it causes acne, baldness, breasts, and a general overall neanderthal appearance.

Penis and testicular shrinkage? Insignificant! Impotence? Unimportant!

When something can override the viability, ability, and size of a man’s pride and joy, you know you have something that no law, no ban, and no consequence will prevent him from attaining!

They are only laser focused on the proven fact that it will make them bigger, stronger, faster, and better. Better able to compete. Everything else becomes irrelevant.

Is it not just a wee bit hypocritical of a society that is constantly clamoring for the glass ceiling to be broken, for the next mountain to be conquered, and for the next record to be broken – to also want to inhibit and restrict their ability to meet our demands?

We humans are a greedy lot. We want what we want and we want it super sized! NOW! Or sooner.

And, no grand jury investigation will ever stop us from getting it!

Sad, but true.

I imagine that if an athlete has the connections to get steroids, buying Viagra or Cialis is no problem. I doubt that any athlete using steroids hesitates to add a few more drugs to the daily routine, which is another part of the problem.

    Good article. Thanks.

I saw this on Facebook a day before it appeared on Triond on your profile or on the News Feed. How odd it that? Triond acts up at times and it is very irritating! Good one. Will come back tomorrow to read thoroughly as just skimmed through it today and have to rush….

Not sure I agree with the priest analogy, but a compelling article nonethless. Steroids will never go away. The only difference between today and the pre-Balco scandal days is that now more people know about. Athetes who are are not genetically gifted have tough choice to make. The level playing field is a myth.

They are the quick road to fame. Society needs to stop being so superficial, or stop being so hypocritical.

  32. Posted December 20, 2011 at 5:52 am

Steroid use is limited to the monarchies of professional athletes.

Sometimes men can be over confident neanderthals. But there are meek ones. Check out my poetry.
