Speed Punch

For a punch to land, it should be quick like lightning.. Your opponent is fluid, moving and evading.. Hit before he reacts..

Though it is true that every attack should contain great power, it should also contain an undeniable speed. We tend to knock our opponent by using force, yet, we forget the fact that without proper speed in every technique, power is useless.

I, as a fighter, may tell you, “Your power can’t affect me, as long as you can’t hit me..” So how can we deliver a “speed punch”…a very fast punch?..

We should consider some factors in developing and using the “Speed Punch”..

First, the Distance. Distance affects the speed of our punch. The chudan tsuki of karate requires a fighter to place his fist on his waist before he can deliver the attack. In that position, we will notice that although that punch may produce a lot of power, it requires a longer distance, compared to a punch deliverd from a guard position, where in, the fist is placed in his chest..

Second, the Flexibility. Muscles should be flexible in order to decrease the tension felt by the arm and shoulder in throwing a punch. One way of developing flexible muscles is by means of stretching. Once your muscles are flexible, you’ll be able to throw a whip-like punch.

Third, Practice. “Practice makes perfect”. By the practicing, you will develop a lightning speed punch. When practicing on speed, try not to put too much power in your every attack, until such time that you can use both speed and power in every technique.
