So the great London 2012 Olympics are well underway, and to commemorate the occasion I felt it would be appropriate to shine a light on the Team GB kit. The kit was unveiled in March year, and after months of waiting we’ve finally seen the athletes put them into action.
Designed by Stella McCartney and produced by Adidas, the kit showcases Great Britain in a manner unlike any of its Olympic predecessors. Focusing on the idea of a deconstructed Union Jack, the kit features various modern interpretations of the flag. Predominantly indigo, the kits were initially criticised for their lack of red, a colour that features less in the flag design and more in the trainers and the outline of the kits. Speaking about her decision to use the design, McCartney said:
“For me it’s one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it’s important for me to stay true to that iconic design, but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way”
Sleek, stylish and modern. The same however can’t be said for Team GB’s opening ceremony kit, one that has resulted in a rather mixed response. Designed by Next, the team walked out in the opening ceremony wearing a white tracksuit with flashes of gold. The tracksuits were far less traditional than the other countries clothing, with people taking to Twitter to voice their opinions. One person described it as ‘chavvy’, claiming the gold made the kits look cheap.
Regardless of the differing opinions, hopefully these kits will help us achieve gold and ‘Inspire a Generation’. Come on Team GB!
