It seems to me that the best indicator of a superpower status is the number of Gold medals they are able to gather at the Olympics games. So far, the medal distributions are obviously skewed in favor of those we consider to be the current super powers, with China standing precariously in the lead.
What is it that the super powers are doing to infuse talents into their citizens? It is true that money plays a role in this, but the way I see it, patriotism and the positive attitude for country is key. China in particular has shown this time around that she is not only an economic power, but they are also on top of every world situation. The USA went to the 2012 Olympics well aware of the threat of China!
Although the Olympics have only run for afew days, China continues to threaten Americans as a super power in the games. We still believe America will be on top of the medal rankings anyway, much as it will never be a walk over. Below the medal list after China an America are the well known world Super powers, the top 7 on the medal rankings obviously show the powers who run the world today.Actually, all the members of the United Nations Security Council appear on the the top rankings. It is therefore, not wrong to conclude that those who are powerful militarily, economically, politically, technologically and socially are also those who are the table leaders in the 2012 London Olympics, just as it was in the past similar games.
Below are table standings as of Today Morning. Tomorrow it could be different, but I doubt if any developing country will show up in the top 5.

interesting ideas.
well an interesting article
I admire all athletes who are able to win enough events, world-wide, to attend the Olympic Games. It is history in the making and all are exceedingly talented and proud of the country they represent…
nice article :thanks for your support
It takes a lot of hard work. Congrats to all the athletes, especially the Caribbean ones
Interesting post thanks
Hard work and dedication.
Kazakhstan don’t seem to be doing too badly, but I agree money can play a big part.
The athletes nowadays got commercial contracts for advertisements and earn a lot of money. This attracts people to dedicate their efforts in being an athlete and striving for gold medals.
Every athlete representing his/her country puts in their best effort. Thanks for the thoughtful perspective.
The Olympics have such wonderful events and talents. USA will be just fine.
I was just thinking this, hence leading me here through an internet search. The current standing is USA, China, and Great Britain, which coincidentally are the 3 leading World Superpowers, at least in my opinion.
