Illegal Sports Bets Reaching Over 140 Billion $ Per Year

Another proof that money has spoiled the sport in general and the fair play spirit.

I have just read the news and I saw something which I was aware of, but still shocked me. I knew that there are many fixed sports events, but never imagined that the amount of money involved is so high: over 140 billion dollars per year. Sports is no more what it used to be, it is more and more a business. If this continues, I don’t know what is going to happen.

I always knew that this things exist, but I thought that the majority of games are fixed by the team owners or officials, because a party needs to win in order to reach something important. But if the amount of money which is played each year on illegal bets is so high, this means that the majority of events are fixed because of illegal bets and many other events fixed by the owners and officials.

I don’t know why this is happening. Players are already wealthy, so why they need extra bucks? Of course, there are many lower divisions, where sportsmen are amateurs, but they play for fun, as far as I know.

So what is the solution? Many would say to ban betting sites and offline agencies, but that will not solve the problems, but make them worse. I think athletes and events should be watched closer and any suspicious act should be drastically punished, even with long jail sentences. Only this way we could lower the damage that is done and make the sports cleaner, even if this things will always happen.

So what do you think? What can be done? I would love to find out what others think about this.
