The Sudbury Wolves will celebrate their fortieth season in the Ontario Hockey League during the 2011-12 season. The team began play in 1972-73 and has produced some great hockey players over the past four decades.

Q. What Ontario Hockey Association team was moved north to Sudbury to become the Wolves for the 1972-73 season?
A. The Niagara Falls Flyers existed from 1960-61 until 1971-72 before moving north to Sudbury. In 1976-77, the St. Catherines Black Hawks move to Niagara Falls and once again there was a team named the Niagara Falls Flyers. That incarnation of the Flyers became the North Bay Centennials and eventually became the present day Saginaw Spirit of the OHL.
Q. What player holds the Sudbury Wolves record for most points in a single season?
A. Mike Foligno totalled 150 points in 1978-79 for the Wolves. The total was good enough to lead the league and earn Foligno the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy. Mike went on to play over 1000 games in the National Hockey League with Detroit, Buffalo, Toronto and Florida.
Q. In what year did the Sudbury Wolves win their first and only Hamilton Spectator Trophy to date as the OHL’s first overall team during the regular season?
A. In only their fourth season since moving from Niagara Falls, the Sudbury Wolves led the league in 1975-76 with 102 points. The 102 points also stands as a team record. The Wolves marched through the playoffs that season but fell short in the Robertson Cup finals to the Hamilton Fincups.
Q. Who is the only Sudbury Wolves player to be named the CHL Rookie of the Year?
A. In 2004-05, Benoit Pouliot not only won the Emms Family Award as the OHL’s rookie of the year but was also named the top first year player in the entire Canadian Hockey League. After that season, Pouliot was selected fourth overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently a member of the Montreal Canadiens.
