Akinori Nakayama (Japan) – 1968 Mexico & 1972 Munich
Winning a total of 6 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronze, Akinori Nakayama played a significant role in the golden success of Japanese men’s gymnastics team at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, where he also captured two consecutive rings titles.
Alexander Dityatin (USSR) – 1980 Moscow
Alexander Dityatin, the most successful athlete of the 1980 Summer Games, was the only male gymnast in history to medal in each of the 8 gymnastics events at a single Olympics. He added the rings gold in addition to the all-around and team title.
Vitaly Scherbo (EUN/Belarus) – 1992 Barcelona
All-around champion Vitaly Scherbo captured his fourth gold out of a total of six gold medals he won at the 1992 Games in one of the most dominant performances in Olympic history.
Jury Chechi (Italy) – 1996 Atlanta
As of 1996, Jury Chechi was the clear favorite to win the rings gold medal, having won four consecutive world titles on his favorite apparatus.
Szilveszter Csollány (Hungary) – 2000 Sydney
Perennial silver medallist on rings (1992, 1996, 1997 and 1999 Worlds; 1996 Olympics), Szilveszter Csollány finally got his golden moment at the final Olympic Games of the 20th century.
Dimosthenis Tampakos (Greece) – 2004 Athens
Dimosthenis Tampakos gave the home crowd plenty of reasons to rejoice by snatching the gold medal from strong competitors that included two-time World champion Yordan Yovchev of Bulgaria, and five-time World and 1996 Olympic champion Jury Chechi.
Chen Yibing (China) – 2008 Beijing
In the world’s biggest sports event at his home country, two-time World rings champion Chen Yibing proved himself to be unbeatable on his specialty event, for which he is known for his impressive difficulty and precision. Since the 2008 Games, he has won two more World rings titles and may easily defend his Olympic title if he does not retire from gymnastics.
