I have written about the basics of security locks and what types are available on the market. In this particular article I am going to give a brief overview about combination padlocks. First of all, let me differentiate between locks and padlocks. Simple locks (mechanical) are opened with keys, whereas padlocks are those which are opened by rotating a combination of dials. These are the locks typically used in business briefcases and suitcases. The electronic type of combination padlock is opened using an electronic keypad. They range from cheap 3-digit luggage locks to expensive, high-security safes.
If you are wondering how long have these combination padlocks been around, well, the earliest known padlock was excavated from a Roman archaeological site. Some others date back to the thirteenth century.
