If you have never been to a the horse races you may not understand the thrill that a gambler experiences.  These thrills can be quite addicting.  I am not an avid gambler, I only attend the horse races once, or twice, a year.  The horse racing industry is huge, often with more money leaving the gamblers hands than coming to them, but the thrill keeps drawing them back, as every punter thinks they hold the winning ticket for the next race.

This poem is written to not only wish you luck, should you take a turn at the race track, but to help you understand the rush a gambler feels.  If you find yourself becoming addicted please get help.

Opening a newspaper,

flipping through its pages,

All these numbers,

numbers and odds,

odd little symbols stars and

the letter (L).

Strange words trifecta, superfecta,

considering win, place, or show.

Silly names gaining attention.

Winning becomes the intention.

Silly names call to you.

Numbers make their case.

3,5, and 7.

4,9, and 7.

3,5, and 4.

3, 5, and 7 scream louder than the rest.

Their pleas become a fate

settled with a jots and tittles on

the racing form.

Firm with the intention of winning

you place your wager.

Trifecta part wheel please;

3 and 5 with 3 and 5 and 7 with 3 and 4 and 5 and 7.

You feel the betting slip in your hand.

The horses emerge, prancing haughtily

parade to the post.

The intention of a win in your mind.

The odds go through their changes

as others place their bets.

The sound of a canned bugle and gunshot.

They’re off.

Round the track, so fast it seems

like they are going in slow motion.

An excited voice pummels your ears.

Down the home stretch.

Numbers and silly names alternate

for the win.

It is finished,

you think to yourself,

I’ve won,

I’ve won,

I’ve won something.

Can this be real?

The results declared official.

Your bet slip in hand,

the line seems shorter this time.

The wait seems longer.

You hand the slip in and are a given pieces

of colorful paper in return.

New numbers catch your eye.

20, 50, 100,

You have realized in your reality

an intention of winning.

You are a winner.

Nice account, if to express the feeling of having taken part in life’s bets. I’d rather take the lottery, no crowd, no commotion. BTW you have a well written experience reminding me of Tobey Maguire in Seabiscuit.

You make gambling seem appealing….as a one-off, it is!!

at least on horse racing you can see the results, you know somebody didnt rig the machine against you – there is always a winner – just hope no horses get hurt.

This poem is great. There are some many other things that are important at a day at the races too though however it is individual choices that make it better

I would love to go to the races. The Kentucky Derby is one event that seems monumental to go to. I love the way the ladies dress, too!

Application components are the essential building blocks of an Android application. Each component is a different point through which the system can enter your application. Not all components are actual entry points for the user and some depend on each other, but each one exists as its own entity and plays a specific role—each one is a unique building block that helps define your application’s overall behavior.

Great bit of writing. I remember the very first time I went to a race course and enjoyed the thrill of being there. Watching those magnificent animals is true poetry in motion. The buzz of the bookmakers, seeking the best odds and watching the action unfurl is a real exciting day. Provided you go to the course with a view that you will lose your bets, then anything that you come away with is a bonus!
