A -mouth-guard is a device worn in the mouth during sports and some recreational activities to help prevent serious injuries to the teeth and jaw . It can also prevent high cost dental bills if a injury should occur.

It should be mandatory for a mouth-guard to be used as protection gear for other sports besides football and boxing like; basketball, kickball, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, and ice hockey. And it should be used for high body contact sports like; wrestling, martial  arts, karate and women’s self defense classes.

Parents should encourage their children to wear a mouthguard along with the rest of their protection gear whenever they are riding their bike, for all skating activities like; roller skating, ice skating, skateboarding and riding  on a scooter.

If your child does not have a mouth-guard you can schedule a appointment with a dentist to have a custom fitted one made or you can purchase a inexpensive one from a sports store.

High school coaches should also encourage each of their team players to use a mouthguard along with the rest of their protection gear for practice and during a game just like the professional players.

Mouth-guard home care maintenance is also very important. If a mouth-guard is not cleaned after each use a  plaque, ( a clear sticky bacterial film) will form onto it. If the plaque is not removed from the mouthguard it will continue building up,  become hard , difficult to remove and  develop an odor. Then when you put it back into your mouth it will cause you to have bad breath.

A quick way to clean your mouthguard when you are away from home is to go to a restroom, use some mild liquid soap, hold it under cool running water , rubbing it with your finger tips. This will to get rid of most of the plague.

When you are at  home you can soak your mouthguard in a cup of mild liquid soap and cold water or mouthwash for  5 to 10 minutes, then remove it from the cup, use a regular toothbrush or denture brush to clean it by using the same solution that you had soaked it in, then rinse it off. After you are finish cleaning the mouthguard you can place in the back into the in the cup with cold water. Then it will be clean and fresh for you to use again.
