The debate on whether soccer should embrace video technology or not has been raging on for a while now,it has received both critics and support from fans and that one shows that there will be a tough battle to get the two sides together. These are some of the famous instances that has elicited strong reactions:
Maradona’s Hand of God
The infamous 1986 world cup final in which Argentina won controversially after it was alleged that Maradona had handled the ball but the referre did not spot it nor give a foul will remain in the memories of many for long time to come.Maradona himself described the goal as the hand of God and this one confirms that truly it was an handball but they went ahead to win the World Cup.
England’s World Cup Victory
England won their first and only World Cup in 1966 through a ghost goal. This was another controversial moment in football’s history which will never be forgotten easily but it went undetected. It raised serious doubts but once again the referee had decided and there was no turning back.
Chelsea’s Elimination from Champions League
As recent as 2005,there was yet another controversial moment when the referee deemed that the ball had crossed the line and thus effectively ensured Chelsea were eliminated by Liverpool in the champions League Semis.TV replays showed that it was too close to call and it could have only been verified by goal mouth technology but it was not allowed by the governing body.
Even with this serious allegations, the world football governing body are not convinced that video technology should be introduced but are considering increasing the number of assistant referees to assist the main referee in the goal mouth area.
Whether this will yield fruits remains to be seen but the football fans will be watching keenly on the developments.
