The Jules Rimet trophy, the best of them all. Every kid grows up wanting to lift that trophy and become a national icon.
Is it finally time to have an eighth winner of the world cup?
So can a passed winner really win once again?
Previous winners:
Uruguay – 1930, 1950
Italy – 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006
Germany FR – 1954, 1974, 1990
Brazil – 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002
England – 1966
Argentina – 1978, 1986
France – 1998
So where will it come from? only Europe and South America have defeated the world, however this coming world cup has some of the strongest teams from other continents in the history of the world cup.
Continent: Oceana
Potential winners: None
With only a 50/50 chance of a team from Oceana actually qualifying to the world cup there is just no way they will be returning with the trophy. New Zealand won the Oceana qualification and now await the second leg of their match against Bahrain for a space in South Africa. The first leg finished 0-0 and New Zealand will be hoping for a win in their homeland.
Continent: Asia
Potential winners: Korea republic
Are you out of your mind? You may be saying. No actually i think South Korea have a great shot at the big one. This is probably the best team Korea rep have ever had. So in 2002 Korea rep grabbed a semi final spot and also had a good go at the Asian cup also finishing in the semi’s and are undefeated in qualifying. More and more players such as Park Ji Sung (man utd) are playing their football in Europe for some of the biggest clubs in the world.
Continent: Africa
Potential winners: Cameroon, Egypt, Ivory Coast
Africa have never won the world cup but boy do they have some good players amongst their nations.
If an African team do win the world cup football’s original genius (Pele) will be correct in his prediction of the Jules Rimet trophy going to Africa by 2010, but who will do it for the continent?
Egypt….. Probably not the team you would pick out the bag but they have kept their nerve against the big teams. Despite not having the team Egypt have proved themselves as the best team in Africa for the last two African cup of nations defeating Ivory coast and Cameroon in the finals however they are not the team for me to go and lift the trophy. For me the team in Africa is Ivory coast. What a squad including, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, Yaya Toure, Salomon Kalou, Kader Keiter and of course Didier Drogba. I suspect these boys will be dark horses. Last but by no means least Cameroon, the African big boys. Cameroon have made six African cup of nations finals winning four of them and with Samuel Eto’o up front anything is possible.
Continent: North, Central America and the Caribbean
Potential winners: None
Although the two big boys in this region have Players in the premiership Mexico and USA just don’t do it for me.
Mexico of course have Giovanni Dos Santos and Carlos Vela but just don’t get enough first team football for their clubs.
As for USA they probably just edge Mexico with one of the best goalkeepers in the world (Brad Friedel) but with the majority of their playing in the MLS for instance Landon Donovan they just don’t have it, because this is just a pub league compared to the premiership and la liga. Well done to USA for winning the confederations cup but this is just a minor competition and every nation will notch up a level for the World Cup.
Continent: South America
Potential winners: Argentina, Brazil
Two of the big boys. What can I say Never write off five time winners Brazil. Not the best team they have ever fielded in the big one, however pure south American skill and brilliance has proved a decisive factor time and time again. But head to head with Argentina who’s better? Tevez vs Robinho Messi vs Kaka Riquelme vs Ronaldinho. Argentina have an awesome strike force but a bit of a blip in the defence for me. Also is Diego Maradonna really the man for the job. Argentina just scraped through above Uruguay and although last time round Argentina were my pre tournament favourites and in my eyes despite not winning the best team in the competition. Some major improvements are needed though if they are going to win the world cup.
Continent: Europe
Potential winners: England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain
For me the odds are clear that the World Cup will once again be retained by a European team.
So England…… England expects and England may accomplish the expectation. Fabio Capello has transformed this team around from a country who could not qualify for Europe to a team which almost wins every game in their group. The one thing which England have that other countries don’t have are a large number of match winners. On their day Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Frank Lampard and good old David Beckham can do the job. Can John Terry be the next Bobby Moore? yes. Can Fabio be the next Sir Alf Ramsey? Yes. Can Steven Gerrard be the next Alan Ball? Yes. But where is Geoff Hurst? For me its Jermaine Defoe. If Defoe keeps his form up in the premiership its a huge possibility he can take that spot. Wayne Rooney is a mastermind but not an out and out goalscorer….. Perfect this and i think England will win.
As for France its mostly doom and gloom for them. An aging squad just doesn’t have it and that goes for the other 2006 finalists Italy. They obviously have a chance but not for me.
Germany don’t have the greatest squad but they are just never to be underestimated as they enter their 12th world cup.
The two great underachievers have very strong squads this year Holland have the forward genius Van Persie who is proving to be one of the best strikers in the world.
Spain well they just have to be favourites you can’t analyse their strengths just the few weaknesses
