What is David Beckham Playing At Signing for LA Galaxy?
It seemed that Becks’s one big wish was to play soccer for his beloved England. Then he seems to throw it all in and signs to play in the United States. Why would he go and do that?

David Beckham is not the most talented soccer player on the planet. He has shown for Manchester United, Real Madrid and England that he has probably the deadliest right foot in the game. But he has maximized his ability with his screen star looks and his off screen nous. His marriage to the former Posh Spice, now his wife Victoria, has done nothing to diminish his bulging fortune.
Beckham does not need the millions he will pocket in Los Angeles. He is already a multi-millionaire. And he has set up his special soccer schools to ensure there is life after playing soccer. So, why would he sign for LA Galaxy, when they cannot offer him a decent standard of soccer week in week out?
His stated aim is to play more than 100 games for England. He is almost there. It looked after the World Cup of 2006 as if he was on his way out. He was dropped by Real Madrid and England’s new manager Steve McClaren told him he did not require his services. But through sheer determination, Beckham forced his way back into both the Madrid and England set ups. But before he did so, he signed for soccer Stateside. That decision now looks foolishly premature.
Beckham has been dogged by injury since getting hurt in his England comeback. He stubbornly played on for Madrid so that he could go out in a blaze of glory by helping them to the Spanish league title. Once he arrived in America, he was desperate to play so as not to let down the fans. But he is also expected to fly thousands of miles across the Atlantic to help England’s cause. It is too exhausting for someone who is heading towards the twilight of his career.
Now he has picked up another injury that promises to sideline him for a few weeks. Is it just bad luck or not? Well, he has suffered a wave of expectation and has pushed himself too far when he should have been resting to get over his injuries. I think he has probably played his last game for England now. The management cannot have endless supplies of patience. As I have already said, he is not the most skilled, nor the fastest player in the squad. There are younger, faster, better players. Becks should move over and make way for them. Thanks very much – and good bye.
I do believe that Beckham was pushed into going to the States by Victoria. She was never much in love with Spain, but she has been attracted by the bright lights in America. She wants to forge her own career, either as a singer, a model or an actress. I believe her husband has unwittingly sacrificed his career for hers.
