We Hate Manchester United: Should We?

Now I know we’re not all massive fans of Manchester United, ok we pretty much hate them but is it time to acknowledge what Sir Alex Ferguson has done and continues doing for British soccer?

As football fans we’ve all experienced that inner hatred when Manchester United score a goal, pass a ball or just enter the Stadium. There reams of superstars seem to relish opposing fans chants of torment which in turn angers us more toward them and the football club. Year after year they pick up silver wear and year after year our envious green is covered with the red of anger and hate. Nobody likes Manchester United, it’s something us football folk grow up on. We love our team, follow our boys and hate our neighbouring teams and of course the exception which is Manchester United.

If we take time out of our football soap boxes and ask ourselves why we hate this club so much, other than its fans of course, there’s not too many excuses left. The manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been the butt of so many chants of rage from visiting fans but I think it’s time, now this may hurt a little to type it, but I think its time to say well done Sir Alex….ouch.

Joking aside, what he has done at that football club is nothing short of remarkable and the way he has gone about it is commendable to British football. Each season I start to feel a bit more appreciation and admiration toward Ferguson and his work, I hope I’m not ill or anything.

Young home grown talent have emerged from the Theatre of Dreams each year including massive names such as Beckham, Giggs and Scholes. Ferguson seems to keep finding them and this season is no exception. Quality looking players like Gibson are coming through the ranks and it’s great for British football and its future. The way united play is magnificent too and that simple passing game is so easy on the eye which can only help the next generation in watching this total football.

So I’ve said it now, yes its Manchester United but what a job and what a team…….long may it continue?? Ok too far I’m sorry!!

Don’t you think that it’s a bit obvious that a team would only be ‘not hated’ by its own fans? I think the fact that you’ve written that: ‘we hate this club so much, other than its fans of course’ is quite silly because this counts for every team… I do agree with you for being impressed withh Sir Alex though..

The rivalry with Liverpool began during the 1960s, when both clubs were the best in England. Here is an interesting fact: the fixture is usually played at midday to discourage fans from drinking before the game! Ryan Giggs even said that “it is the most famous fixture in English football”. Liverpool has a total of 40 trophies and Manchester United of 32, and both clubs claim the title of ‘the Greatest English Football Club’. Unfortunately for Liverpool, only one team has it right.

    Manchester City
The Manchester City rivalry dates back to the Newton Heath era of the 1890s. The game between the 2 teams is called the Manchester derby. United fans point out that City have gone awhile without winning a major trophy, whereas City fans claim United do not actually come from Manchester. The 2 teams have met 149 times, United have won 59 and City 41. …

It’s natural for people to automatically dislike a club that’s consistently successful. It does get quite old and irritating after years and years of the same unoriginal jibes, but we should ultimately take it as a compliment.

By the way, can people please post comments that we English speakers can actually understand? For example:

I can hardly decipher what this all means. Seriously, you’re not sending a text message. Write in English we can read please. And do learn how do spell our Centre Back’s name properly. It’s NEMANJA.

i really do get your point but its got to the stage where because of all his success ferguson seems to get away with absolutely anything. It gets to the stage sometimes were you think to yourself well he might aswell make up the rules and be in charge. And the so called millions of Man U fans world wide…. most of them only support them because A. there succesful or B. cause there basically the only club people from other places have heard of in the UK.

Another thing he has done a lot for English football and helping it become recognised as one of the best leagues in the world but does no one else feel slightly sorry for the SPL ( scottish premier league :) ) as he made aberdeen in to a european conquering side and basically now the scottish league has all gone down the pan. shame if you ask me.

Yeah cause it’s not as if Liverpool don’t have any OOT/overseas glory supporters is it?

Although “glory” supporters is probably taking it a bit far.

    canaryboy;

I’m an overseas football fan and its true that all the top 4 have OTT supporters, the majority of fans from the other teams (including ones like spurs and villa) can actually name the 1st team squad, whereas the majority of chelsea and united fans can maybe name you 5.

United are hated because of the arrogance and ignorance of their fans; and also because their manager is an arrogant and unscrupulous character. although admittedly you cannot argue with the success he has had, it would have been nice if he actually conducted himself with dignity and humility some of the time.

The majority of fans dislike at least one team – I’ve supported York City since I was 7 (1971) and prior to that had a liking for Leeds purely because of who they were at the time. I’m well aware that we have our rivals – it was Scarborough until their demise but I’d love to see them back. Chelsea have Milwall, Arsenal – Spurs, Pompey and Southampton, Palace and Brighton, Newcastle and Sunderland etc, the list goes on. MUFC have Leeds, Liverpool, Man City as their main protagonist but as they’ve become more successful in the last two decades, they’ve collected a few more.

As someone else has pointed out, the thread is pointless and you’re always going to get muppets on a wind up, those that can only converse in text language, newcomers and armchairs who seem to think that because of MUFC’s status, that is the only team they should hate – a few years back it was Arsenal, prior to that, Liverpool, Leeds are in the pot too but the reason behind the petty hatred with most is jealousy, look at what MUFC have achieved in the last 15 years, they’ve proved it out on the pitch, most of the acquisitions have proved fruitful and as a business, they’ve grown massively.

Every dog has it’s day – teams fade and become mid table again or drop to the lower leagues, look at most of the successful teams of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and there are very few in the top flight. What the big teams have now are investors and a much wider fanbase, for this the smaller clubs suffer but I’ll happily go on watching my team while they’re still around, likewise, I’ll turn the box on and watch with an amount of envy and admiration the way the big teams go about their business on the pitch. I will also hope for a day when York can play Scarborough twice a season again.

    united we stand
    stated that………

Liverpool has a total of 40 trophies and Manchester United of 32, and both clubs claim the title of ‘the Greatest English Football Club’.

I disagree with these stats :-

    Title Utd Liverpool
    League 18 18
    FA Cup 11 7
    League Cup 4 7
    CL/Euro Cup 3 5
    Other Euro 2 6
    World 2 0

    Total 40 43

If you add Charity Shields then Utd have won 13 & Liverpool have won 10 which would put a total of Utd 53 & Liverpool on 53.

Utd have a great shot at the PL & CL this season. If they win their next 10 games they will win both. That would certainly edge Utd in the overall trophy count.

Come on Utd lets do 4 PL\’s in a row and make 3 CL finals in a row. The most consistent side in Europe.

    40 trophies to 32?!

Only a Liverpool fan could count United’s trophies as League, FA Cup and ECL whilst including the League Cup and UEFA Cup in their own trophy count. 43-40 is spot on.

No doubt a fan who still supports Rafa.

I hate Manchester United. I’d rather any other team win the premiership and the other cups as well. They have won enough and I hate their glory hunting fans especially.
