After a couple of threats fired out from newly promoted Premiership teams over the last couple of seasons the inevitable ‘big club’ has finally dropped into the Championship at their expense.
Massive Football Club
Newcastle United, the self acclaimed ‘massive football club’ will be playing their football in the second tier of the game next season, taking their overrated millionaires to unglamorous venues such as Scunthorpe Uniteds Glanford Park and Peterborough United’s tiny London Road.
Alan Shearer took charge with only 8 games remaining in a last ditch attempt to save his beloved ‘Magpies’ from the drop but not even the Toon legend could dig them out of the mire pit the club dug themselves into over the past few seasons.
‘This has been a bad football team for some time’
Since the departure of Sir Bobby Robson the ‘Toon Army’ have continually voiced their disapproval at each Manager installed at St James Park. These claims of under achievement thrown at the team from its fans could never be addressed and solved over night and it is the fans false perceptions and belief that it could be done as soon that have seen Newcastle United spiral out of control toward the Premierships drop zone and finally fall from the league. A wake up call was needed long ago for these fans……this is a bad football team and it has been a bad football team for some time.
The board of course need to shoulder some responsibility for the clubs relegation. The appointments of Souness, Roader and Wise have not helped the problems on Tyneside but the signing of Big Sam Allardyce really could have. Big Sam is proven to turn a clubs fortune around and his shrewd ways was just what Newcastle United needed. Owner Mike Ashley had pulled off a wonder stroke in appointing the former Bolton boss.
‘No patience and no sense’
Cue the fans in black and white tinted glasses. After 3 months things were not going as well as Allardyce had hoped but as he was only 3 months into his new job, just beginning the complete regeneration of Newcastle United then things not running smoothly had to be expected…….did these fans see the long term plan Allardyce did? Of course they didn’t. The perceptions of “we are Newcastle, why aren’t we in the top 6?” started to spill from the stands. They called for Big Sams head, the board folded to these claims and the rest is history as far as I’m concerned. No patience and no sense = a soon to be crowned Championship based football team.
I’m not sure what these fans expected Allardyce to do over such a short duration of time but it was this dismissal that not only saw a big chance in turning Newcastle United around and into the club the fans believe it should be but it was this dismissal that ultimately cost the club its Premier League status.
‘This relegation was a long time coming’
These fans who vented their anger at Big Sam are to blame for this clubs relegation. They believe their club is bigger and better than it actually is. Newcastle United are a very poor overrated football team and they’ve been a very poor overrated football team since Sir Bobby Robson left them, this relegation season was a long time coming.
Sam Allardyce has the pedigree to transform a football teams fortunes…….over time that is. If the fans would have persevered with the big man then I am positive the club would be looking forward to another season in the top flight with solid foundations laid to build upon.

too true……excellent article.
up the sunderland!
Hard to argue with any of this. Mind you, I’ve come to loathe the Premiership and all it stands for, so relegation wasn’t the end of the world for me. The promotion season 1992-93 was brilliant, and it was a lot easier to get tickets. Despite living 200 miles away, I saw the lads four times that season (and they won them all!) Looking forward to a return trip to Peterborough…
Very easy to argue with all of this ridiculous article. Firstly, I’ll wager you are the sort of chap who thinks Ashley is in charge and we are mere pawns in all of this, then you contradict that by stating we got a manager sacked and we are to blame for relegation. I would like you to tell me how I am to blame for anything when all I do is hand over money and go and sit or stand and watch the team I love play?
Also, Allardyce had lost 5 games on the spin, and we had games coming up against Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea and Spurs away when he left. When Keegan came in we played better football, results improved and we finished the season well. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike Allardyce at all, far from it but he is very stubborn (often a good thing) and he plays football his way. Something our team were not equipped to do. He likes to play very direct football at a high tempo and we had Owen and Martins up top, neither is a decent target, and had no pace and no width – especially as he liked to play N’Zogbia at full back.
This is the kind of article which implies a common sense of purpose and intelligence among a group of 50,000+ people – which is basically prejudiced. Nobody expected us to be top 6, and predictably you have no evidence to back up such conjecture. Finally, I would like to add in a brief English language lesson – the word big is a measurement of size, not success. Our great football club is definitely not successful, but I don’t think anyone could argue that it is not big.
