The Golden Ball 2008

The Golden Ball is an award that is awarded to the best European soccerplayer of the year. It is awarded by a French soccer magazine. All players over the world can be elected for this prize. The winner earns the Golden Ball and of course a lot of respect.

This award (originally “Ballon d’Or” in French) has been awarded to the best European soccer player by a French soccer magazine every single year since 1956. The winner is determined by a number of soccer journalists from various countries. Since 1995 the players were also non-European descent, but who play in a European competition, are eligible for the trophy. Since last year, any player from all over the world can be selected.

In the history of the election, the Netherlands have done well in soccerelections. For example, Marco van Basten and Johan Cruijff both won the Golden Ball three times. Ruud Gullit has also won this prize once..
