Premier League Statistics You Never Needed to Know, and Never Cared That Existed

Some obscure statistics that may prove invaluable at some period in your life. Ever wanted to know who is the tallest player to ever play in the premiership? Or maybe your curious about what team has the lowest point to match ratio?

Ok, first lets start with the statistics that probably wont be a surprise to anybody-

Players With Most Red Cards-

Joint 1st – Richard Dunne, Patrick Viera & Duncan Ferguson (8)

Joint 4th – Vinnie Jones, Roy Keane, Alan Smith (7)

(Six Players you definitely would not want to meet down a dark alley)

Premier League All Time Top Scorers-

1st – Alan Shearer (260)

2nd – Andrew Cole (187)

3rd – Thierry Henry (174)

4th – Robbie Fowler (169)

5th – Les Ferdinand (149)

(Five of the best strikers to ever appear in the Premier League)

Premier League Players with Most Assists-

1st – Ryan Giggs (65)

2nd – Thierry Henry (62)

3rd – Frank Lampard (60)

4th – Steven Gerrard (54)

Joint 5th – Cesc Fabregas & Wayne Rooney (49)

(This list needs no introduction at all)

Ok, now onto some more obscure statistics…

Lowest Points accumulated since start of Premier League (min 1 full season)-

1st – Swindon – (30)

2nd – Wolves – (33)

3rd – Barnsley – (35)

4th – Watford – (52)

5th – Bradford – (62)

(Watford and Bradford have played two seasons in the Premier League, while the other three teams played just one season. Interestingly, Swindon played 42 games (instead of the typical 38 games), and still accumulated the lowest point score the Premier League has ever seen)

Lowest Point per Match average (min 1 full season) –

1st – Watford – (0.68)

2nd – Swindon – (0.71)

3rd – West Brom – (0.79)

4th – Bradford – (0.82)

5th – Wolves (0.86)

6th – Barnsley (0.92)

7th – Crystal Palace (1.00)

8th – Sunderland (1.01)

9th  – Derby (1.03)

10th – Oldham (1.06)

(This was the hardest statistic to compile as even clubs that ranked in the top half of the all time point score, had played many more games than teams at the bottom)

(Take 40 points – the number of points usually required to survive – as 1.05 points/game)

All Time highest number of goals conceded-

1st – Tottenham – 879 goals @ 1.35 / game

2nd – Everton – 833 goals @ 1.28 / game

3rd – Newcastle – 769 goals @ 1.26/game

4th – Aston Villa – 760 goals @ 1.17 / game

5th – Southampton – 735 goals @ 1.45 / game

6th – West Ham – 733 goals @ 1.37 / game

(Note Southampton and West Ham have conceded less goals, but their average is higher. This is because both sides have been relegated and played outside the Premiership. This suggests that if both clubs had not had spells in the Championship, they may have been 1st and 2nd in the table respectively)

All Time Highest Average Attendances –

1st – Manchester United (59,500)

2nd – Newcastle (44,306)

3rd – Liverpool (41,506)

4th – Arsenal (40,113)

5th – Sunderland (38,974)

6th – Manchester City (35,474)

(I think this statistic is a real reflection of what clubs have the most loyal fanbase. Whilst remaining impartial, there are a couple of clubs – one in particular – that do not feature in the top six, that now have a very large fan base) Anyway, I digress…

First Player (in terms of number of appearances) to reach a set number of goals- 50 Goals-

1st – Andrew Cole (65), 2nd – Alan Shearer (66), 3rd – Ruud Van Nistelrooy (68)

100 Goals-

1st – Alan Shearer (124), 2nd – Thierry Henry (160), 3rd – Ian Wright (173)

Youngest Player to reach a set number of goals-

50 Goals-

1st – Robbie Fowler (20y 251d), 2nd – Michael Owen (20y 255d), 3rd – Wayne Rooney (21y 54d)

100 Goals-

1st – Michael Owen (23y 133d), 2nd – Robbie Fowler (23y 282d), 3rd – Alan Shearer (25y 138d)

(One point to note here is that Wayne Rooney is currently 23 ½ years and has already scored 77 goals)

And Finally-

Tallest Players to grace the Premier League- (excluding goalkeepers, otherwise it would be boring as top 5 are all keepers) … still, no prizes for guessing 1st…

Joint 1st – Peter Crouch, Zat Knight, Gerald Sibon (198cm)

4th – Daniel Van Buyten (197cm)

Joint 5th – Tony Crane, Anthony Gardner (196cm)

(For those curious, Gerald Sibon is a centre forward who had a spell at Sheff Wed, Daniel Van Buyten made 5 appearances on loan at Man City in 2004, and Tony Crane was a centre back who had a four year spell at Sheffield Wednesday between 1999 – 2003)

Smallest Players to grace the Premier League-

There are 6 players who share the first prize in this prestigious award. They are;

Joint 1st – Paul Brayson, Andres D’Alessandro, Andrew Durcos, Clint Marcelle, Danny Wallace & Alan Wright (all 163cm or 5” 4’)

I hope you enjoyed my compilation of useless statistics. Maybe this isn’t any use to you at this moment in time, but one day, in a pub quiz, or another life or death situation, when you are asked who was the 4th tallest player to ever play in the Premiership, or who was the 3rd youngest player to reach 50 goals in the Premiership, you will now know.
