Park Ji-Sung
Park Ji-Sung has established himself as key figure and captain for his national team South Korea, And plays club football in the English Premier League for the mighty Manchester United
Park Ji-Sung was born on the 25th February 1981 in the South Korean capital Seoul, However he grew up in a satellite city 30 kilometres south of the capital called Suwon, As a youngster Park was overlooked by many professional teams due to his small size and played for his high school football team before playing for his university team Myongji,
Park got his lucky break when Japanese division 2 side Kyoto Purple Sangasigned him up in 2000, Park helped the team get promoted to the first division in 2001, The following season Park helped the team win the Emperor’s Cup with a goal in the final which was the first time in the clubs history that the team has won the cup, After a successful World Cup campaign for South Korea Park followed the national team coach (Guss Hiddink) to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in 2003,
At first park found it hard to establish himself in to the first team as he struggled with injuries, However by the end of the 2003-04 season park had started to adapt to the European style of play, The following season with the departure of Arjen Robben to Chelsea park managed to get a lot more starting opportunities, Before long Park had formed the backbone of PSV Eindhoven’smidfield with his fast pace and precision passing, as a sign of his hero status at the club the fans wrote a song about him titled “Song for Park” which featured on PSV’s official album.
After having Park watched more than 20 times Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United decided to sign him for a reported £4million in June 2005, Park went on to become the first Asian player to captain Manchester United and is the first Korean player to win the English Premier League, Park has had a lot of success at the club and has won many trophies, He is the only Korean player to win the UEFA Champions League and is the first Asian to play in the final, Although Park has some times been over looked due to some other big names at the club he has remained a key figure and is highly rated by the manager, The 2008/09 season was a very good season for Park and he is likely to play a major part in United’s quest for silverware in the 2009/10 season.
