Dutch midfielder Vurnon Anita is understood to be undergoing a medical at Newcastle today (15th August).
Newcastle will hope that the deal is completed in time to make him available for the opening Premier League game of the season at home to Tottenham on Saturday.
Anita said earlier this week: “I think it will be finished soon, but you never know how it will go. I have played for Ajax for 13 years, it has been a great time and I am grateful to Ajax. Now it’s up to me. But first I want to talk with the manager of Newcastle United before taking a decision. The whole picture has to be right for me.” Predominantly a midfielder, but also able to play at left-back, Anita came through the academy set-up at Eredivisie giants Ajax and made his first-team debut in the 2005/06 season. Should Anita sign, he will join Newcastle’s other summer recruits Romain Amalfitano, Curtis Good and Gael Bigirimana.
The transfer fee is said to be around 6.2 million.
