The world of football is huge and with over 75 million fans worldwide. Manchester United can justifiably claim to be the biggest club in world football. The name of the club brings a sense of passion to the minds of millions. The happiness felt by one whenever Ronaldo or Rooney scores a goal can only be described by a true United fan. The club was originally formed by the rail workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (near the city of Manchester). In its early years the Club was known as Newton Heath L & YR FC (also nicknamed ass the Heathens) but developed the name Manchester United in the year 1902.

The starting of Newton Heath in the league was traumatic and the almost unknown club did not have many supporters. But as the years passed, the team Manchester United started to attract more fans as they started climbing the scoreboard.
When Sir Matt Busby joined Manchester United in 1945, he made the finest football team in all of England. The team at that point was often regarded as “The Busby Babes”, because Sir Matt Busby, their inspiring manager, was like a father to the United family. Unfortunately, this family was destroyed and the lives of eight ‘Babes’ ended on 6th February 1958. The team was on its way home to Belgrade after beating Arsenal when they stopped in Munich to refuel their aircraft. The runway was covered with slush and the aircraft never reached its destination as it skidded and crashed into a nearby fence. This incident shocked the whole world, especially the city of Manchester. One fan couldn’t believe that this had happened and stabbed himself with a knife! Duncan Edwards, someone who could have been the best Manchester United player ever, too lost his life in this crash.
Sir Matt Busby decided to move on and tried hard to make United a champion again, to pay tribute to his lost family. The years following the tragedy were extremely hard for the club. Even new recruitments did not help them win matches at that time. Sir Matt and other survivors were not able to mix up with the new youngsters, quitting the team. But the bad time for Manchester United did end and they did rise; Denis Law and George Best were a major part of this reason. The trio of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton took the club to new heights, winning trophies again. Law once said, “Sometimes we play like we are one person.”

Though the club had to face numerous troubles, Manchester United never gave up.
That’s the reason they are at the top. The current players are successfully following the footsteps of the Club legends, like Cantona and helping them is Sir Alex Ferguson, their manager. Full of stars, United are perhaps the only team with a mixture of experience and fresh talent. With players like Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and many more, United will undoubtedly be the champions for the years to come.

For many, Manchester United is more than just a football team. What is it about United that so many are ready to give up everything, even their lives, for the team? Why on Earth do rational human beings come to love something as vast, something as contentious and something as disparate as United? It is not a matter of ‘how’ or ‘why’ for them. It is just unbelievable to see how one person can have so much respect and love for a football club. But with Manchester United, anything is possible.
