“Rafa Rafa”, every game in Anfield his name is screamed by Liverpool supporters who won’t ever thank him enough for his champions league victory in 2005 and for all the other trophies he brought to Liverpool. Is it not time for all Liverpool supporters to get up and say no more Rafa, go away. It is worth saying that the first year Rafa arrived to Liverpool the team was in shambles, The post Houllier years’ degraded the team and the team was becoming what Newcastle is today.
In his first year after a dramatic final in the champions league he gave Liverpool its 5th champions league victory. This directly brought his credibility to the top of the game, making many even to think that he was better than the special one. We remember that while a coach at Valencia he had won to Spanish titles in front of the household names such as Real Madrid or Barcelona and also a UEFA title. After the champions league victory, the hopes in Liverpool rose up. Everyone expected him to be the one to give Liverpool its first EPL title and its 19 championship title after an 14 years wait.
The next year he didn’t still win the title as Liverpool finished fourth but won the FA cup in an another dramatic final. After that began Liverpool’s years of drought. During the summer Liverpool was really active. He brought in Fernando Torres, the kid captain of Athletico Madrid who everyone in Europe was fighting for. He got Ryan Babel, the prodigy in Holland, Benyaoun and Voronin. The team looked like a team that was seriously able to win the title.
However even though Torres proved greater than all expectations Liverpool still stumbled . By this time some critics began ushering for the sacking of Benitez. That same year Benitez suffered alot from internal conflict from the new American presidents. He was a hair close to step down only to the forever support of the fans and his victories in key games. That same year critics criticized Benitez for his ever lasting rotation of the squad though he argued in favor of it, the results didn’t really prove his point.
The next year proved to be Benitez best year in the championship taking the second place with a weaker squad than his previous year. Still it was without a title. This year for the first time the bookmaker’s choice for the team to win the championship was Liverpool with Manchester United losing its two key players. However he is having one of the worst results ever in his tenure at Liverpool. 3 defeats in 8 games.
Is it not time for Benitez to leave and bring another coach to take Liverpool to the top level? He has had a lot of excuses to sheild his failure to win the title but this year will be too much. I do pity him for the fact that he is not offered the same amount of money as other coaches but some of his expenses are astounding. Buying a defender for 20 million pounds is crazy as that money could be used to buy a good forward and defender. He argued for him to be in control of the transfers but his recruits are not worthy. Lucas, Aurelio, Leto just to name a few. He has also had some great recruits like Torres and Mascherano but most of them have been money wastage recruits. For 5 years that he has been in Liverpool with the promise of giving Liverpool the title but he still hasn’t. So maybe this guy is overrated.
