Euro 2012 – Will The Party be a Happy One?

Too many controversies shrouding the game this year. Will all go off well in the end? Two days left for us to know.

The first rain of this season! As I stand by my window I can see two boys playing football on the terrace. Well, rather getting wet in the rain more and playing less. That reminds me, Euro 2012 is just round the corner. Only nine teams have managed to lift the trophy till now. Wonder what will be the result this time. Will Spain make history by winning three major tournaments one after the other?

However this time the game has been shrouded with controversies.

When Poland and Ukraine bid for Euro 2012 they were already fighting tough competition from the likes of Italy. Then began the problem of creating pitches that matched the guidelines of UEFA. Italy and Scotland were ready to take over but the host nations did not give up.

However this was not the end of their woes. Accommodation and proper transport were a challenge. A bomb last in Dnipropetrovsk earlier this year stirred off the security issue as well.

Pictures of Tymoshenko, the former prime minister who had been jailed, wither punch marks on her tummy and arm was also running high on people’s minds while Ukraine continued to try and impress with its modern up-to-date transport system.

Not to forget racism. Africans, Asians and Indians have all faced it – students beaten up, thugs victimizing dark skinned fans during a domestic league match!

It does not end here. Italy is basking under the inglorious scandal of match fixing as well. Fifty arrests have been made so far. Is football still football in this country?

What a beginning to such an awaited party season!
