England’s Soccer Strikers: Who Should Lead The Attack in 2010?
England have qualified for South Africa 2010 and the World Cup Finals. But one question on the tip of the tongue for many England soccer supporters and other supporters of this great game is who should be pairing who on the striker front when the Three Lions kick off?

So England have raced ahead of their qualifying group for the coming World Cup Finals in South Africa in 2010. A relatively tough group to qualify, England have had to prove themselves as a major soccer force to be reckoned with after their disastrous 2008 European campaign.
If anything they have to silence the laughter from around the world. They have also done so in style and relative ease. Wembley Stadium, or should I say the “new” Wembley Stadium, has become once again a fortress and sends shivers through opposing soccer nations who grace its lush playing field.
To many England fans the appointment of Fabio Capello as head coach has brought a great wave of excited anticipation as England prepare to do battle in the World Cup Finals. His coaching style has been second to none and it is quite apparent he obtains the respect of his charges under his guidance. This has echoed into the back room staff and travelled to the paying fans that watch. Even the English Soccer journalists are dropping their sarcastic sneering to embrace the new coach and his band of gallant players.
So what next? To win the World Cup is every nations supporter’s focus and dream. But how do you go about winning it and who is going to get you the goals you need? Perhaps this time around Capello has probably one of England’s strongest and well equipped bunch of strikers to get the job done. This backed up by some exciting attacking midfielders.
England have the likes of Wayne Rooney of Manchester United and Jermain Defoe of Tottenham Hotspur. Both are firing in goals for fun already so early in the English domestic Premier League as they both strive to stamp their claim in Capello’s starting eleven when England kick off their campaign in South Africa in anger. Emile Heskey is also a regular starter for Capello. Despite him not getting the goals his presence and off the ball play have proved to be priceless thus far for England.
Other players are slowly beginning to stamp their own mark. The unfortunate injury prone Michael Owen is finding his scoring touch again with Manchester United and Darren Bent seems to be scoring for fun for Sunderland. Then we have David Nugent who is hoping to find his form and score more goals to prove a point. Peter Crouch, now at Tottenham Hotspur and paired up with his old strike partner Defoe, adds a different dimension for attacking options with his height and excellent touch for such a big player. Plus there are others we can name with a possible chance of making the squad to help push England towards that golden trophy.
So who does Capello go with? Does he stick with his tried and tested formula thus far with Heskey and Rooney, or does he pair up Defoe with Rooney? Most people can argue that the “sure goals” will come from both Rooney and Defoe. But football is never so predictable, especially when it comes to pairing up strike partners.
In my opinion it has to be Rooney and Defoe. Both perhaps not the “Big guy, Little guy” formula, but both already proving they know where the back of the net is for their respectful teams. Then again I would say Defoe being a Spurs supporter myself.
We can all speculate as to what the best combination will be. But all England fans know and can look forward to is watching their national team with perhaps two of the world’s best strikers on their side with a few more keeping them on their toes when they jet off to South Africa next year.
