Atletico Madrid and Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan was voted ”best player” by the international soccer body FIFA, for his performance at the 2010 South African World Cup. He was also announced the winner of the Golden Ball award of the spectacle, based on media votes. He was followed by The Netherlands (Holland) -Inter Milan’s midfielder Wesley Sneijder and Spain – Valencia forward David Villa. Sadly for Forlan Uruguay cheated to pass into the semi finals, but were punished 3-2 by Germany and managed only fourth position over all. However it was the first time since 1970 that Uruguay was able to reach the semi finals, but at what price. Uruguay cheated against Ghana, when their forward (also registered with Dutch team Ajax) Luis Suarez used his hands to hit the ball out – denying the winning goal for the only African team that was still in the competition. Ghana’s controversial exit paved the way for Uruguay’s second best performance in the history of the world cup. Nevertheless Forlan’s performance was above average, he score 5 goals and made 1 assist.
