As Ferguson Signs Van Persie What Happens to Wayne Rooney? Will He Team Up with Soccer’s Bad Boy – Ballotelli?

Far from solving his goal scoring problems, United manager Sir Alec Ferguson may have created another big one for himself.

Wayne Rooney does not see himself as a second string striker or a midfield provider of chances for Van Persie.

Rooney wants the main striker’s role but that is the position Van Persie has been signed to fill. His goal scoring for Arsenal last season, which kept the club afloat as a Champions League prospect, decided Ferguson. Whether the Glazers had the money or not, this was the player he wanted.

Ferguson felt humiliated last season as City beat them to the Premiership title. It was obvious to even diehard  United fans that City were the better side and Ferguson’s ego can’t handle that. 

Last season he tried all kinds of formations to try and find a settled, winning side. He was so desperate at one point that he persuaded veteran Paul Scholes to come out of retirement. When that didn’t work he tried playing Rooney in midfield, with Welbeck and Hernandez as strikers. Now he may be considering playing Van Persie and Welbeck as lead strikers with Rooney behind them.

That will not suit Rooney at all. He wants to be grabbing the glory and the goals, not sharing them with an expensive Dutchman who earns significantly more than he does.

One thing Rooney does spectacularly well when his wishes are ignored is sulk. Ferguson may find himself with a dispirited player who begins to hear the call of Manchester’s nightclubs, and the attractions of a night out with – who?

Nights out with Balotelli
