Al Fahim Gives Pompey New Lease of Life

It appears a new dawn is arriving on the south coast in the form of Saudi businessman Al Fahim. However, is this new era one that Portsmouth want to be a part of? In the summer when Manchester City were taken over Al Fahim was the front man for the venture. After many interviews claiming that the likes of Ronaldo and Kaka were making their way to Eastlands people branded Al Fahim a liability. It may be a worry that instead of being able to then escape the limelight as he did then, that he may be kept in the public eye and tarnish Portsmouth FC’s solid reputation.

Another major concern some fans have is the obvious jealousy that will be received from other supporters due to Pompey’s new found spending power. It would be terrible if Pompey were to be dragged through the sewer as a result of the takeover. Pompey fans are known throughout the football community to have one of the most vociferous fanbases in England and it would be a disgrace if this was to change through no fault of the fans.

One major plus though is obviously the transfer budget that the new boss, whoever he is, will be able to spend over the summer. However, it would be a shame if, like Manchester City, players such as Kaka and Ronaldo were to be linked with Pompey. It appears only to have damaged City and I hope that Pompey learn from their mistakes and set the bar lower than world class superstars.

The managerial situation will need to be sorted out quickly as well. With so many tops class managers being linked with the job, like ex-Inter boss Roberto Mancini, one can only hope it is cleared up in the next few weeks to give the man coming in a chance to spend some of Al Fahim’s millions.

It is good to see after all the years of relegation battles in the first division and miracle escapes in the Premier League that Pompey now has a solid foundation on which to build a future for themselves as an established Premier League force. One can only hope that this deal does not turn out to be too good to be true and Pompey end up paying the price while Al Fahim slinks away to find another plaything.

Interesting to read this now after the saga that went on at Portsmouth over the summer! It did not go as everyone predicted.
