After a poor performance in the premier league last season, Chelsea have revived their squad after the departure of some old guns by the arrival of talented young players. Didier Drogba having departed for Shangai Shenhua, Chelsea are still looking for his replacement. Cavani and Hulk are the top contenders to fill the void created by him. Recently, Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has also been linked to the blues. Kalou and Bosingwa left as free agents. Malouda is set to leave. Rumors are that Ivanovic may also leave this summer.
Chelsea succeeded in signing Eden Hazard, one of the hottest properties in Europe. Hazard, termed by some as “The new Ronaldo” is likely to set the premier league on fire. Other signings include German international Marko Marin and Kevin de Bruyne from Genk. It will be interesting to see how Roberto Di Matteo manages this younger and talented Chelsea side. Their style of playing will also have to change, as there are more creative and attacking players now who can support Juan Mata.
The power of this revived Chelsea squad was observed in their opening game of the World Football Challenge pre-season tournament against Seattle Sounders which they won 4-2. Lukaku scored twice, while Marin and Hazard bagged one each. Some of the young chelsea players to watch out this season are Hazard, Marin, Lukaku, McEachran, Mata and Sturridge.
Jose Bosingwa being allowed to leave this summer, Chelsea are looking for a quality right back. Di Matteo has drawn up a list of four options, including Borussia Dortmund star Lukasz Piszczek, Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel, Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy and Manchester United youngster Rafael da Silva. A couple of more additions can be expected in the squad as the blues seem to be spending big this summer.
