The snowboard was said to have been invented by Sherman Poppen in 1965. It was originally called a Snurfer, a combination of the words Snow and Surfer. This board was of a basic design and did not have the secure bindings found in modern snowboards. The state of Utah argued that snowboards were first made there during the early 70’s. The United States mint commemorated this sport in 2007 by placing a picture of a snowboarder performing a downhill stunt on the quarter. Sales of snowboarding equipment skyrocketed in 2008, with average sets selling for as much as $540. This includes the snowboard, the boots and the bindings. The sport of snowboarding became a $487 million industry! Let us find out why snowboarding is the latest craze amongst holidaymakers in the Alps:
People like snowboarding out of bounds
Snowboarding resorts have predetermined courses that have been inspected by expert
skiers and rangers. These courses are designed to guide snowboarding patrons to safe
locations where they will avoid injury or contact with wild animals. Snowboarding
out of bounds simply means the rider is not following the predetermined course,
making his/her own way down the mountain. For them, it is a challenge since they do
not know what to expect and what types of jumps they can encounter.
Snowboarding is a sport, and a fashion statement!
While a rider descends a slope, the audience watching him/her would think that he/she is a bank robber because of the handkerchief masking his/her face while snowboarding. The handkerchief may make the rider look funny, but it actually serves a lot of purposes. A normal handkerchief is made out of cotton, which holds water. It will freeze and will actually be a detriment to the rider because he/she will have difficulty breathing. Fleece-lined material works best to keep the ice-cold winds away from the face. The rider can also use the handkerchief to clean his/her goggles.
One word: Fun.
Snowboarding is just like going down a slide or riding a descending roller coaster. Snow laced with ice is slippery, and is a delight for children and adults alike.
It is no wonder snowboarding is the latest craze amongst holidaymakers in the Alps. The many innovative ways to slide down slopes provide fun and excitement. There is no need to elaborate on that!
