This week’s “how-to” is how to double peg grind. The double peg is a fairly simple trick. The first thing you want to know before learning to double peg is how to bunny hop about six inches or so. Next you want to check your bike: what you want to check are your pegs and your axles. Make sure you have a 14mm axle in the back and 3/8” or 14mm in the front. Your pegs should be bolt-on pegs, not screw-on pegs. If you do have screw-on pegs, it’s best to invest in bolt-on pegs such as the Odyssey G.I.s or anything similar in design. If you don’t get bolt-ons, they will fall off while you grind. Once you have all the right parts on your bike and can bunny hop, you need to find a waxed ledge, either at a skate park or around town. Once you find one, it’s time to get ready to start grinding.
1) Check to make sure you can bunny hop the height of the ledge. Either a friend should watch you bunny hop next to the ledge or you should video tape yourself.
2) When you’re sure you can bunny hop the height of the ledge, ride parallel to a line and bunny hop over it without steering towards it. It is critical to be able to do this while learning to grind because when you hop onto the ledge this will allow you to get both pegs on.
3) Once you’ve learned to hop ledge height and can hop the line without actually turning, it’s time to get onto the ledge. What you want to do is ride parallel to the ledge at a comfortable speed and stay about 8 to 12 inches away from the ledge. If you’re too close to the ledge, you’ll hit it coming up. If you’re too far away from the ledge, you’ll go at an angle and land unevenly on the ledge.
4) Bunny hop onto the ledge the way you jumped over the line. While grinding, a common mistake is not lifting the back of the bike up while focusing on the front of the bike.
5) Once you’re on the ledge, you want to jump off. Just bunny hop off like you would normally, except that you have to push yourself away from the ledge.
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it on the first try! Sometimes it takes a few tries and sometimes even a few days to learn this trick. Grinds aren’t an easy trick to learn. When you do learn the first one you try other grinds will come more easily.
