Extreme Sports: Skateboarding

Skateboarding is an extreme sport activity that allows skilled skaters to demonstrate their prowess with tricks and games while having fun on a skateboard.

Skateboarding first made its appearance in the 1950s. Skateboarding involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. Skateboarders are sometimes called skaters. The feeling experienced by skaters is similar to that experienced by surfers.

During the 1980s, skateboard companies-usually owned by skateboarders-started producing new styles of skateboards and skateboarding equipment, such as skate shoes. Now many large action sports footwear and apparel companies, such as Etnies, offer lines exclusively designed for skaters. Skaters can use this Etnies coupon to save on their purchases of fashionable skating gear.

Skateboarding gained more prominence in 1995, when ESPN held its first Extreme Games (X Games). The Summer X Games and the Winter X Games have extreme action games as their focus. Both Extreme Games are sponsored by ESPN.

The Summer X Games held this year saw Ryan Sheckler winning his third gold medal in skateboarding.

World Cup Skateboarding is the international body that governs world skateboarding competitions. As with car racing, skateboarding teams are sponsored by companies, rather than countries.

The Ollie

The Ollie maneuver was created in 1975 by Alan ‘Ollie’ Gelfand.  In the Ollie maneuver, the skateboarder slams his foot down on the back of the skateboard and simultaneously jumps into the air. This has the effect of propelling both the skater and the skateboard into the air.

Illegal Skateboarding

Skate boarding is considered a public nuisance and safety risk in a few areas. The Laguna Beach police department receives more than 100 calls from residents complaining about skate boarders.

For safety reasons, skateboarding is illegal in some areas. Police in recently seized the skateboards of three skateboarders who were found riding in an out-of-bounds area in Adelaide. Although skateboarders say that specially designed skateboards allow them to maneuver easily, drivers say that they still pose a significant risk to themselves and others by skating in roadways.

They must really designate places for skateboarding for safety reasons. I am always amazed at that Ollie move. Really cool!

This is really good. I remember skateboarding when I was a kid, but I never did the things that they do now.

I think a good big playground for skateboarding will help develop this sport and keep away the participants to play on the streets that may cause danger.

As long as the skateboarder is wearing protective gear I think it is a great way for them to get exercise and release a lot of energy.

think about it, I have never try skateboarding as I scared to fall. I have tried roller skating many years ago, the first time I tried I was not afraid to fall and I enjoyed very much (3 friends holding hands), but next day aching here and there. Another time I skated but afraid to fall and did not enjoyed at all, since then I have not skated, when I see people playing skateboarding, I will go far away as afraid they will hit me instead.. ouch!

I like to watch but wouldn’t dare try. Much too old for that activity.

Some of the moves are pretty amazing. Skateboarding is very physical and requires a lot of talent and training. My admiration to them. I doubt I could maintain my balance for a few feet. Good share.

I like to watch them, but it beats the hell out of me how they do it.

Safety while skateboarding is important Brewed. The skater may be confident in their skill but accidents can occur in an instant.

    Hi Linda
Not all areas have those facilities so in some cases it would help.

Freethinking, I agree. It is a good way to release energy.

Star, I want to learn snowboarding but I am not too excited about the aches and pains.
