Archery is a sport in which the participant uses a bow to shoot arrows at a target, which consists of 10 scoring zones in the form of 10 concentric circles. In competition, a series of arrows is fired from 30, 50, 70 and 90 m (roughly 100- 300feet) for men. And it is 30, 50, 60 and 70 m (roughly 100-230 feet) for women. The score for each arrow depends upon where it lands on the target. The highest score, a 10, is achieved by shooting an arrow in the gold colored central zone. Scores go down from nine for the next circle out to one for outermost circle, the sport is governed by the federation international de Tir an I Arc (FIRA) which was formed in 1931.

Archer was a feature of the Olympic Games several times from 1900 to 1920, but then disappeared for more than 50 years. It reappeared at Munich in 1972 and has remained a fixture ever since. The world championship takes place every two years and is contested on a knockout basis.

Instituted in 1961 – cash prize 3 lakh, the award is given to outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen. The sportsperson should have excellent performance not only in the year for which the award is recommended but also consistently for the previous 3 years at international level.

Shooting is a sport, in which a rifle or pistol is discharged at a target divided into four concentric circles, each of which counts for different score. A hit in the innermost circle, called the bull’s eye, fetches 5 points.

Famous Indian shooters: Abhinav Bindra- first ever Gold medal for India at world shooting championship, Anjali Bhagawat, Gnanan Narang-2007 ISSF world cup gold medal in 10 more air rifle event Jaspal Rana won four gold medals at 2006 commonwealth Games. Lt, Col Rajyavardhan Singh is first Indian ever to win an individual silver medal at Olympics (Athens, 2004), Samaresh Jung-Adjudged the Best Athletes of the 18th commonwealth games.
