The policemen, said to be from MOPOL 39 Squadron in the state, were shot by the hoodlums around D-Line axis of Port Harcourt.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, who confirmed the death of the two policemen on Saturday, explained that the armed robbers operated with an ash-coloured Peugeot car.
Ugwuegbulam stated that the deceased policemen were on a visit to Port Harcourt from Ahoada when they were hit by the bandits’ bullets.
He said the command had begun investigation into the matter with a view of arresting the armed robbers.
Meanwhile, three suspected members of an armed robbery were shot dead by men of the state police command in Kor, Khana Local Government Area.
Ugwuegbulam said the armed robbers, who were about 30 in number, raided Kor community, shooting one of the community leaders in the process.
He said, “Distress call was received by Bori Police Division that armed hoodlums numbering over 30 had invaded Kor.
“The armed robbers had attacked houses and carted away household equipment. Further information received was that the hoodlums shot one chief and severely giving her deep machete cuts on her legs.
“Police anti-robbery teams were deployed to the area and upon arrival at the community were engaged in fierce gun battle with the hoodlums. Three members of the gang were fatally wounded while the others took to their heels and escaped.”
Explaining that the police have begun a manhunt for the fleeing armed robbers, Ugwuegbulam added that a locally made double-barrel pistol and three machetes were among arms recovered from the bandits.
