Due to pressure exerted from certain quarters and the programme co-ordinator being tortured into submission, this year’s New Year’s Eve Run will be conducted as a normal race. (The entry fee will help to cover the cost of the refreshments copiously consumed after the run -especially by the programme co-ordinator, Newsletter Editor and President ( just to name three!!!).

Our sincere apologies to Albany Athletic Group for the ommission of the Albany Marathon from the 1986 programme. In the many drafts and re-drafts of the programme the marathon was inadvertently omitted in the final draft. The AAWA has indicated that this marathon may be the State Marathon, so perhaps that news will be some consolation for our oversight.

“That’s a bit a corker”, i thought, when David Mansfield suggested I do a piece on Marathon Running and Politics. As it was after the new year’s eve run at Yokine ,I must that perhaps the strains of the piper had affected the President’s judgement. But ,when I resumed my stubbie  routine , a few ideas began to emerge and what folows is the result.

DOGS: What is there in common between marathon training and political door-knocking? . Answer -Dogs. I’m sure we in the club have all had our arguments with dogs, my worst one was along the Canning River tow path at Rossmoyne when a German Shepherd tasted a bit of my thigh, coming at me from behind. This is in fact made the score One All between politics and jogging, for back in England electioneering had brought a dog bites . This was quite a few years ago.

DEHYDRATION: We don’t have our Marathons in the heat of summer, so I contend there ought be a law stopping politicians calling elections in W.A. over December to February. Or at least a Gentleman’s Agreement.

STAMINA: As it turned out i was the oldest canidate in the recent election , at least the Western Mail said so, being 70 this year. But one of my reasons for keeping fit by jogging is to help me face the times of pressure in my life.  Thats what Frank Hansford-Millar said in 1986.

I hope you all like this story and let me know what you think of it.
