The fastest and most reliable move a man or any four-legged living animal can do is to run, to get to someone else, to reach the highest point, to hurry up if you logged behind, to beat the old record, to finish first against an opponent, and to move faster to outclass your counterpart. All of these can be done through running.

Running is the oldest and the most celebrated sporting event since the time of Greeks. People communicated through running in early times. Their early style of living depends on how fast you chase a fish or rampaging water. A good example is the marathon, an epic display of man’s prowess towards survival and achieving his goal.

Nowadays, marathon and other events that develop in running significantly contribute to the development of skill, stamina and strength which are the main areas of concern of coaches and even teachers in each Physical Education classes.

The events in the track in field or athletics are divided into three main categories, namely, Running (sprinting, middle distance, long distance and marathon), Jumping (long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault) and Throwing (discuss, javelin, shot put and hammer).

Sprinting is the first basic skill that should be learned in running. Each individual are encouraged to practice following the mechanics of correct sprinting techniques.

  1. Lean your body forward and swing your arms between your hip pocket and ear.
  2. Drive arms forward, lift your knees, take long strides, and look straight forward.
  3. Runners should observe running with the balls on your feet rather than flatfooted.

The next skill that must learn in running is the basics in starting and sprinting. Getting on to a good start is a skill that needs practice.

Jumping involves developing the strength of spring and a skillful landing. There are basic jumps that need practicing, jumping from two feet to two feet (broad jump), two feet to one foot, one foot to the other foot, and one foot to the same foot.

Throwing over-arm is one of the difficult skills to acquire. It involves a complicated series of actions which must be properly coordinated to be successful. The most difficult part is to achieve the movement that transfers your body weight to the throw, following through the body as the arm releases the object, thus producing a long throw. To develop the skills in throwing, the learner should practice in the straddle position, face the target and bend the throwing arm, keeping the forearm vertical. Turn the body at the waist and move the throwing arm back so that the opposite shoulder faces the target. Straighten and trust the throwing arm forward to release the ball. These are the basic techniques that the learner must try starting from a kneeling position, then to a standing position.
