Nearly three decades on, it is predicted that Tommy Persson will finish the race in new record time. Though will he? Tommy Persson won the Inaugural event almost thirty years ago in 1980 in a still standing world record time. He completed the marathon in an astounding 2 hours, 11 minutes and 2 seconds and no one is history has ever ran a marathon in such a flat out pace before. However, Persson hasn’t returned a 26 mile marathon since.
Tommy Persson has got some fast challengers on his tail and will need to up his game for the Columbus Marathon. Even in the Inaugural race in 1980 when he set the world record, he did have a major challenger, Ron Tabb, though he had to pull out after 10 miles due to a sore heel.
There are also other runners climbing the ranks and setting personal bests that Persson might be threatened by. Darren ReReuck finished in 2:16:28, his personal best, and Matt Foulk finished in 2:19:47, two years ago. Another thirteen men entered with respectable times ranging from 2:12 to 2:50.
