In Warwick shire England there is a town named Rugby. It is in this town in 1823 a man named William Webb Ellis was recognized for being the person to invent the concept of the game of Rugby.
Ellis was playing a football match when he decided carry the ball and run with it. In football picking the ball and running with it is against the rules.
Rugby is now a global sport played in countries all over the world.
The recommended age for children to begin playing rugby is around 5 years of age.
Children under the age of 8 should first begin playing tag rugby until they get comfortable with handling the ball and learning the skills of the game.
Your child should have the following equipment for Rugby.
- Mouth guard
- Rugby shirt
Your child should have an experienced Rugby coach. The coach should also have an approved qualification from the RFU.
When choosing a rugby club for your child make sure the club has the following:
- Is affiliated to the RFU
- Qualified first aider present during lessons and matches
- Health and Safety Policy
- Child Protection Policy
- Codes of Conduct
