An Excuse for Partying, The Rugy 7S in Wellington, Nz
It doesn’t matter if you’re not into rugby. If you live in Wellington, the sevens are a must.

I am a New Zealander, therefore I am supposed to be interested in Rugby, the game played with an oval ball. I admit, I follow the games on TV, my sister and I watch and compare the abilities, the looks and the physiques of the players. But I am not an expert. I’ll leave that to fellow NZ Triond writer, Ben Pearce, who obviously knows what he is talking about. His latest article, Irb Wellington Rugby Sevens: The Biggest Party in New Zealand Sport will give you an introduction to the game that takes our nation into fever zone every February.

In the relatively new Wellington stadium, called The Cake Tin, thousands flock this first weekend in February to watch international sevens rugby and more importantly, to be seen. Since the game has been scheduled in Wellington, it has been an excuse to party. People turn out in weird and wonderful costumes, hoping to catch the eye of others and also the TV cameras. Whatever their interest in, or their loyalty to the game of Sevens Rugby, they are there to be the most supportive supporters any team could imagine.

It was reported in the Dominion newspaper this morning that one man who has attended every Wellington sevens tournament, does so to combine the two great loves of his life – rugby sevens and not having to wear pants in public. This year he is dressing up as one of new Zealand’s top netball players, Irene Van Dyke.
The games are playing as I write. There appears to be a capacity crowd and so far the atmosphere is electric, but orderly. This year I’ve not yet seen costumes on the borderline of decency, but the crowds do seem to have been using their imaginations to outdo previous years.
A game that can offer sporting opportunities to many nations, that draws in the crowds to the capital city, thus adding to the city’s economy, and at the same time offers a chance to party all weekend in the sunshine, must be good for every one.

I am definitely a Sevens fan. I don’t say I actually understand the game, but I love watching it. The speed and skill of the players is something to be admired. And where else could I sit back with a glass of wine in the comfort of my own home and comment on the legs and abilities of the men on the field.
Every country has their own sporting heroes and the sporting series they support. As it is February, I confess to being a Rugby Sevens fan, for this weekend any way.

Great article and thanks for the mention! The Wellington Sevens is great for New Zealand sport and one the best for pure atmosphere. Will hopefully get to attend in future
That second picture is rather scary!
Nice post. Good Work!
Nice compelling post about sports. The best thing is being at home and watching it on TV with a bowl of popcorn. Saves you from the danger of travelling outside and any possibility of fans cheering in rampage.
Rugby madness in NZ sounds a lot like football madness in the US. Western civilization has been mad about sports ever since the ancient Greeks. I wonder why that is? I’m sure there must be some good studies on this madness.
go you 7s go hahaha yeah its a great game alright..
Good write. Sporting events are meant to appease the populace. If people are focused in the game, lesser people are creating trouble. It’s still works in these modern times.
Yeah Sevens, well written article.
another good entry
great sahre
great share
The second pic is rather scary. lol.
Rugby is complicated to watch! The fans though make it exciting
who cares if you understand the game as long as you are having fun!
Good Post
Wonderful post! My friends love to play that
Here, it’s football. My crowd can’t miss a game but I am not a fan. I always have something more interesting to do.
Thanks for that
I just want to pull their penis socks off.
lol
cheers
Nice post, Val. My friends love the game.
I didn’t realise that rugby was such a big deal in Wellington. Very informative article. I didn’t know much about rugby, but I have always admired the hard hitting.
Tremell, rugby is new Zealand’s ‘national’ sport and sevens rugby is just a version of this. Rugby of any sort is big anywhere in NZ
