There was big news that came out from the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage when it was announced that Jeremy Mayfield one of NASCAR’s up and coming stars was suspended indefinitely but it wasn’t for anything involving the car it was violating NASCAR’s drug policy. What hurts the most is that he along with several drivers brought back an old tradition driver/ownership.

For anyone new to NASCAR there was a new drug policy introduced after a driver admitted to being high even during races. Before the season started everyone who works for NASCAR including drivers, crew members, owners, and etc were drug tested. Throughout the season there are random drug testing by using a computer if picked you have to give two samples and if they both come back positive your gone.

This year we’ve seen crew members being suspended violating the new drug policy but this is the first time a cup driver and most importantly owner violated it. Unlike baseball and other major sports NASCAR has the toughest drug policys. On Saturday evening Mayfield released a statement: “As both a team owner and a driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, I have immense respect for the enforcement policies NASCAR has in place. In my case, I believe that the combination of precribed medicine and over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test. My docotor and I are working with both Dr. Black and NASCAR to resolve this matter.”

Unlike other violations in NASCAR this can’t be appealed there is a bright if Mayfield wants to have the car on the track he will have to list it under a diffrent owner/driver. The team can still operate but under someone else according to Mayfield his team will still attempt to make every race under the terms of the suspension. By next week Mayfield Motorsports will make the announcement who the iterim owner and driver will be. The roles will start at the Sprint Open and run through Charlotte and beyond.

In this race fans opion this is a big mess and hope that it gets straightened out because Mayfield is a talented driver and that he took this big step putting is own money into this team.
