 After having a new upgrade on the MacLaren cars, both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button spoke about having a strong qualifying result at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which they hoped to convert to a win. McLaren have been falling behind the other constructors, resulting in their drivers frustrated with the pace of the car, and then  groaning when their pit stops were so much slower than anyone else’s.

Last week Button managed to get second place , whereas Lewis’s hopes  at the German Grand Prix were dashed, when he had to retire with a puncture caused by debris on the track. But this weekend belonged to Lewis. He set the pace in Friday practice, and then again in the qualifying session on Saturday, posting a time that no-one could match no matter how many times they  went out.

But winning a Grand Prix these days is not just about being the fastest person. It’s about tactics, how many pit stops you make, and tyre degradation. Lewis had proved he was the fastest, now he had to put all the rest of the ingredients into his attempts to win that race.

He got away to a superb start, and led all the way, but he didn’t have it easy. Grosjean from the Lotus team  was within a second of him, biding his time to see if Lewis would make any mistakes he could capitalise on. This is where Lewis’s experience paid off. He allowed him just close enough, but it caused Grosjean to often over steer and pick up dust, whereas Lewis kept up a steady  pace to protect his tyres, and was able to stay out longer.

MacLaren had employed a two stop strategy, Lewis kept his calm and drove steadily, whilst around him, other drivers were going in to have their tyres changed. Button was less fortunate, his tyres didn’t last for him, so he had to make 3 stops.

Towards the end of the race, Raikonnen took second place from Grosjean, and bridged the gap between himself and Lewis by less than a second. Would he use the advantage of fresher tyres and overtake Lewis at the end? But no, he didn’t have the extra  surge that was needed, although he tried very hard, and all credit is due to him. Lewis fought off his challenge magnificently, proudly crossing the line to take his second victory of 2012.

Gros jean was third, Vettel fourth, Alonso, the current champion was fifth, and Button was sixth. The championship this year is proving to be very interesting, with 7 different winners so far. Lewis is one of 3 drivers,  namely Mark Webber and Alonso, who have won more than one race.
