F1’s Budget Abyss

Formula one is slowly on its way to disappearing.

Since the creation of the high-class racing series, Formula One, a racing division bent on being the fastest, most advanced, and not to mention the prettiest cars, money has never been the problem. The majority of the teams in the series gather financial support from sports car enthusiasts pouring their riches into the game. Most teams have come across fine as the budget necessary for a season continues to rise steeply past the hundred millions. Recently, the FIA decided this was unfair to the smaller teams without any “sugar daddies” paving their way to a strong car and team.

In response, FIA will enforce a cap at forty million dollars next season.  The low budget struck up quite the war between the upper and lower class teams. While the teams who only have forty million to spend despite the new budget ruling are ecstatic to finally be given the opportunity to be competitive, teams like Ferrari who have a legacy to hold up are infuriated. The frustration they have spoken is truly reasonable.

If F1 is, as I stated before, meant to be the all-around best racing sanction, not only in driving ability but every aspect of speed and beauty, what might the cap do to that reputation? Next year brings many speculations; a shortened budget brings about lower-grade cars which in turn reduces speed which in turn shrinks the quality of the sport. The cap is a domino effect of destruction, and F1 can only hope they have more than 6 cars a race next year.
