I am a sho Dan in Karate, Shota kan and would recomend the learning to be started young but not too young, start at about ten to give time for the brain to develop some understanding of the world, i think children should be very aware of the safety side and excersize too young is not good for them, so again prob ten is a good age.Just for your info it is open hand, and so good for the body it teaches respect of your opponent and to understand the need for compassion, i have silver medal for kumita compertition and graded at 40 years old now i am 58 and into my work roll but still train at home.and am trained in many forms of defencive stance.
