Silat is exotic traditional martial art from South East Asia, which in ancient times, called Nusantara. Traditionally, it has various names, such as Pencak, Silat, silek, pencak silat, penca, menca, mamenca, and olah kanuragan. This traditional martial art is widely known in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore and its variation is also found in South Philippines and South Thailand.

Silat history is not easy to trace back because of the lack of historical documentation. The information of origin of Silat is handed down orally from the gurus or masters based on oral traditions. Two kingdoms, the Srivijaya in Sumatra from the 7th to the 14th century and the Majapahit in Java from the 13th to 16th centuries, which ruled across some South East Asia territory, called Nusantara, developed this martial art. Due to the frequent contact among Nusantarian and Indians, and Chinese in the territory in ancient times, Silat is also influenced by fighting styles from Indian and China.
