If you are confronted on the street and feel threatened enough and think you will be attacked, then make the first move and attack. That may sound counter-intuitive but there is no reason to stand there and wait to be attacked. The longer you wait, the worse the psychological situation becomes and you may become more afraid. This is a strategy when you have nowhere to go and there’s nobody around to help you. Also, consider the effect this will have on the assailant. Most people who attack others, for whatever reason, have already decided you can be beaten. So showing this kind of attitude sends a very clear signal.

If you take martial arts or have in the past, then you now there are certain points you cannot go beyond. You pull your punches and kicks because you don’t want to seriously hurt your sparring partner. On the street, never forget there are absolutely no rules. Your opponent will do anything to hurt you including biting anywhere on the body and more. There is no sense of honor with street fighting and it’s sheer and pure survival of the meanest. That also applies to you as well, and you do not pull any punches and fight to put your opponent down and out of action.

People who have any training in martial arts have usually learned some kicking techniques. Well, leave all that in the dojo because in a real fight a kick will usually get you hurt even more. You have to be very highly trained over many years to land a roundhouse kick. Even with all that, chances are excellent you may still get hurt. Kicks are just not the smart thing to do in a street fight. Now, depending on the situation you could go for a low kick to the shin or knee and score. But you have to judge the probability of success with those and be careful.

Not all self-defense techniques and methods are the same. Some of these strategies are really not all that helpful in a serious situation. What you should do is seek out as much information as you can. And avoid anything that appears to be a bit fancy because they’re useless for the average person. You can also take self-defense classes which tend to focus on techniques that are practical.

After all, having a healthy body is the utmost important thing for every human life.
